Personal findings, in case helpful to anyone ..Xpost, Poll of sorts about PPIs and...
Yes I take Prevacid and yes I have constipation. I have added a Colace to my daily pill regimen and that helps soften it significantly. I still have times when its difficult, but that is usually because I'm lacking water or perhaps fat in my diet.

I had to start a PPI presurgery by 3 years because of GERD that is a sleep disorder for me. Knowing the VSG can cause or increase GERD I never went off it post op. I have had to start taking a second dose in the am and that has helped my hunger as well as breakthru reflux.
I do have constipation post op but did not have it preop. I take Miralax every other day and have a lovely soft poop with minimal potty angst every day. If I add Benifiber even with the Miralax I am in potty hell. for me,it is a no brainer...I will stay on the PPI indefinately.
interesting poo,um post.

It seems that a nice chunk of folks who did not have constipation preop with the PPIs definitely have it post op!
Thanks for sharing, girlie! Its really been an interesting gathering of information, especially on all the different ways folks deal with the constipation!
Although, I am surprised none of the guys wanted to chime in. Are not boys always wanting to talk about body functions? Maybe just not with a gurl!! :}
Thank you again!

Hi --
I have NEVER -- not one day of my life had constipation until I had my sleeve. I was on protonix for 2 months before surgery. Then post op I was still on protonix twice daily and carafate 3 x a day for the first 3 weeks and I needed a laxative to go each time. Last week I was switched to nexium twice daily and I am still constipated! I cant get down softner capsules so at first it was milk of mag... now I am trying to get in benefiber and every other day taking a bisacodyl. Grrrrrr So I dunno if it is ppi for me b/c I was on it pre op and didn't have any issues. For me I think it is the high protein, not as much fluid and WAY less veggies. Good luck!!! Amy

I am sorry about the miserable time with constipation you have had!! Like I told Holly , at the very least what I have learned by asking the question is a zillion and 1 ways to try and cure the constipation!
And too, from the folks who have answered (who are by no means all the folks, you know.. just the ones who have played along) MANY of them seem to have been fine preop, or even had diarrhea at first with the PPIs, and the post op had the clampdown!!
I sure appreciate you adding your cents!!
Thank all of yall for being potty mouthed with me!
hahaha! I crackle me upz!

"The Clampdown..." Yeah, pretty much! When it's RIGHT THERE but just won't move... okay let's not get too graphic lol. I only took a PPI for 4-6 weeks, starting maybe a month out of surgery, because everyone else seemed to be. I was getting hungry, but later realized it was because I'd started drinking coffee too soon. But yes.... I have to really work at keeping things moving in there, otherwise I wind up miserable and uh...sore. If I'm eating as I should be to keep losing weight, then I have to take 2-3 stool softeners daily and make sure I get enough water... not enough water, and the ss's don't help anyway, so then once or twice a week I also drink a cup of hot herbal laxative tea before bed. As if my pelvic floor wasn't already prolapsed enough lol...
