Stomach Problems

I had to call my surgeon over a month ago because I was having pain around my belly button and it was real tender.  I was able to pass gas and use the bathroom.  He sent me a prescription of Carafate and it got much better.

This past weekend I cooked for the week and everything I fixed had a tomato base to it and some of them were pretty spicy.  I ate it for 3 days and it started hurting again.  I had some of the Carafate left so I started taking it and trying to be careful what I ate and it is getting better.

I decided to call the nurse to talk with her and be sure it couldn't be something else.  She made me an appointment to see him on December 7(my choice because I have so many other things to do the next two weeks).  She told me if it got to hurting real bad to go to the ER.  I told her I really thought about that Tuesday afternoon because it was hurting pretty bad.  She told me I could take an antacid and to finish the Carafate.  He may want to run some test and she will let me know about this.  They can do that the morning of my appointment.

I sure hope this is not the start of an ulcer or something.  I never ate a lot of spicy food before surgery, but I really like it now.  I also drink my decaf coffee and tea.  I hope I don't have to give that up.

Any thoughts or ideas??
Linda

Could be any number of things they'll just have to rule out one by one. Ulcer or hernia would be a non-medical guess. I hope you can keep on ticking until you have your appointment. ((hugs))

Can you always feel a hernia(might be a stupid question)?  I don't feel any bulge or anything like that.  I don't really know much about them.

I'm going to lay off the spicy, tomato food and might try to not drink as much decaf & tea.  If it gets to hurting bad again, I'll call her back and go on to see him.  I really don't want anyone around here messing with my insides because they don't know anything about it.

Thanks Gina.

My mom was prescribed Carafate for a small ulcer and it healed it. She had to take it 4 times a day (which would be hard for WLS patients because of the restrictions on empty stomach, taking 1 hour before or 2-3 hours after a meal).

I am on Carafate to coat my stomach so I can safely take ibuprofen. I only take it once a day because I can't fit it in my schedule another time.

It is really hard to get it on an empty stomach during the day.  I can do it first thing in the morning and right before bed.  During the day, I'm usually always drinking something.  I try to wait until before I eat.  It does make it feel better, but mine was really expensive even with insurance.

I only have to pay $5. We have really good prescription coverage. They cover my prilosec too. I don't even have an empty stomach before bed. I eat a snack after dinner, and usually crash by 7 or 7:30p.m. (guess that's what happens when you get up between 3 and 4a.m. like a nut)

I had 2 huge hernias before surgery, fixed during surgery and never knew it.  I have always had a cast iron stomach and still do so I can't relate but I'm swinging lizards for you.
