Protein Coffee...Do Tell

I will have a revision surgery in Dec 2010 and I've read the menus and miles postings.  I always see protein coffee.  I've cut coffee out of my daily regimen, but this sounds pretty interesting.  My question is: Is this premade, or do you simply add protein powder to your coffee?  Is there a specific brand that tastes better than the other?  Do tell...

Hi Indy...The protein coffee is wonderful in my book!! You can vary this up and use decaf, tea, or even hot cocoa...

1-2 scoops of protein powder (unflavored, vanilla, or chocolate)
1 cup ho****er (under 130 degrees or it will clump real bad)
Sweetner to taste (I use Torani Sugar Free syrups in all kinds of flavors)
Creamer if you want to add...

Stir and enjoy.

A few don'ts: NEVER microwave the beverage once mixed...it gets very angry. Never stir the powder in real ho****er...it clumps up bad and cannot be fixed...

Recipes:

Peppermint Mocha Latte

1 pkt of sugar free hot chocolate
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I use Dymatize Elite Whey 24g from Vitamin Shoppe)
1 ounce of SF Torani syrup
1 cup brewed coffee (12 ounces or whatever your size is)

make cup of coffee as usual. Stir in packet of hot chocolate mix. Let sit for 2-3 minutes. Add syrup and stir. Then slowly stir and add the protein powder (usually mix with fork). Let sit for 30 secs to froth at top. Top with whipped cream and cinnamon. Enjoy!!

Chai Latte

1 cup brewed chai tea
1 scoop of vanilla protein powder
Italian Sweet Creme coffee creamer (coffee mate creamer) to taste/color

Make tea as usual. Let sit for 2-3 minutes. Add creamer and stir. Then slowly stir and add the protein powder (usually mix with fork). Let sit for 30 secs to froth at top. Top with whipped cream and cinnamon. Enjoy!!

Workday Protein Coffee

1 cup brewed coffee made nice and strong
1 - 2 scoops of vanilla protein powder depending on the travel mug size
SF Torani syrup (right now I have gingerbread, pumpkin pie, and peppermint)
Add creamer to lighten if needed/wanted (seasonal flavors are yummy!!!)

I drink this on the way to work (1hr commute) and I can get anywhere from 24-48g of protein to kick start the day. Works great.

There are many ways to whip up some protein coffee. Others will chime in and give great tips and recipes hopefully (I will be taking notes guys...lol)

Me personally, I enjoy making different shakes/coffees etc since protein shakes can be dull and yet our biggest sources of protein.

Have fun with it!!

Diana,

I've had good success with microwaving my protein coffee.  I make a HUGE pot of coffee in the morning and turn it off right after it's brewed so it doesn't get burnt.  When I make a protein coffee with the cold coffee it nuke it.

I mix my milk and protein powder and any flavourings, making sure it's smooth and creamy.  Add cold coffee and microwave for 20-30 seconds at a time (stirring in between****il I get it hot enough. This makes the coffee really creamy almost like a latte.  :0))

I typically make my protein coffee's with a vanilla protein powder and add either syrup or the Splenda flavoured sweeteners (THEY ROCK!)  :0)

Yasmeen...that's good to know.

I had a bad experience once...and that's all it took (after cleaning out the microwave...) I think you hit it on the head and that's to stir until it gets hot enough. Left alone to warm up...um, the creature from the swamp emerges.

I'll have to be patient and brave and try it again. :)

Here's my easy-peasy method for protein coffee or chai tea latte:

1 - 20 oz shaker cup with wire ball
4 to 6 oz of 1/2 & 1/2, water, or milk
1 to 1 1/2 scoops of IDS Vanilla-Cinnamon protein powder (Champion Nutrition Chocolate, IDS Cappuccino, Nectar Cappuccino, etc.)
{shake} until blended
Pour into large mug
Add 9 to 10 oz of hot brewed coffee or chai tea (decaf or reduced caffeine)
{stir}

Add hot liquid to cold liquid to avoid lumps. Keep the protein slurry below 160 degrees.

I'm still on decaf so all of my protein coffee is really decaf.
My favorite is Nectar Latte but if out or running low, I will use whatever vanilla or chocolate I have on hand.
Mix the slurry or warm water and protein powder.  Doesn't take much water to disolve the powder and pour it in your coffee/decaf.  You can fancy it up with the SF syrups, a pk on SF hot chocolate mix, milk or enjoy it as is.
It's the easiest way I know to start the day right.

Here's what I have for a good 30 grams of protein to start the day:

1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 scoop Click protein powder - mixed in water and stirred really really well.
Pour in ho****er to fill your mug, stir some more until thoroughly blended.

You can also add 1 tsp of instant coffee for more of a cafe mocha taste.

I sip on my protein coffee every morning on my way to work.  Here is how I make mine:

FIll up my commuter mug with hot coffee.  Add 2% milk to cool it down.  Use one of those mini-whisks to stir in GNC's Chocolate Caramel protein powder.  YUM.........
