Need Vitamin D Information - School
I'm a few weeks away from the end of my one credit hour, not needed, thought it would be a blow off, nutrition class. Anyway, I have this huge project to do and was assigned vitamin d. Does anyone have any interesting information they could send me or links to information? I'm starting my research, but I figured I would ask you guys too since some of you know a ton and some weird things about vitamins. Thanks in advance!
I have some bookmarked on my desk top. Vitalady has a several articles and studies she's posted here on the LW board...last year or 2. She and JuneCleaver were having a....um, discussion. There's one on the website of Today's Dietitian. Here we go: www.todaysdietitian.com/newarchives/tdoct2007pg12.shtml
An interesting nugget. Vitamin D2 (the crap docs prescribe) can't be absorbed by RNYrs and DSrs because it goes through a process in the duodenum to be converted to D3, which is what the body recognizes and can use. Since we don't send our food through the duodenum any more, D2 is useless to us. That's why we take dry D3. You probably already knew that though. I'll see what else I have bookmarked and edit this response.

I dont know if there have been any studies on this but I was losing my hair something horrible. When the doc ran my vitamin levels he found out I was SEVERELY below normal. He put me on a high dosage and my hair started growing back in. Myabe it was just coincidental, I dont know. It was beautiful before surgery and now I am working back on it.
Check out the Vitamin D Council's web site too.
The thing about Vitamin D is that science and the medical community are changing their minds about it and that means the info you get on websites might be contradictory. For example, the RDA was recently updated and also the reference range.
The main thing is that we are discovering that a lot what we used to believe is wrong. We need more vitamin d than was thought and our range should be higher than was once thought. Also, it's a lot harder to get Vitamin D toxicity than was once thought.

Unfortunately, I am probably better off going with the old information. I have butted heads (and got low scores on many assignments) with my instructor many times. She is very against limiting carbs, does not think people need high protein diets or should use protein supplements, etc. She gives us tons of informations that contradicts itself, then our tests are based completely on her notes. I can't wait to be out of this class.
Shannon, I would be so frustrated!
Here's another article from Today's Dietitian on protein diets. lol http://www.todaysdietitian.com/newarchives/020810p34.shtml
Linus Pauling on vite D: http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/vitamins/vitaminD/
Towards the bottom of the discussion, it talks about how we need more than was previously thought and the tie in to osteoporosis is good. You might want to check out www.nof.org and search on vitamin D for their articles.
Yeah, and all these articles are all about normies not what happens with folks who malabsorb fat soluble vitamins.
Good luck!
