So I am 11 days out, and diligently taking my vits. I bought my calcium citrate chewables online, and was reading them yesterday and there is no vitamin D in them. I do go in for labs next week, but am wondering if I should go buy some D, or wait? Just wondering....

I'm not the vitamin expert that Gina is, but from what I understand, you have to take a D3 with the calcium citrate to be able to absorb it properly. When I was on chewables I had to get the D separate. Now that I can take pills it comes together.

You can pick up dry D3 at VitaminShoppe or you might even want to try the liquid. You're probably low on D3 as most people in the US are. Go ahead an start dry D3. You can take about 20,000IUs of dry D3 until you get your labs back and then tweak from there. You want to stop all vitamin supplements at least 12 hours before your blood draw and drink plenty of SF fluids. Make sure you get your own copy of your labs when you go to see your surgeon. Just tell them you want to track the levels yourself and watch for trends.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much. I didn't know any of this. I think I saw D3 in Walmart. It was in pill form. Hope that is right? I LOVE this site!

My son gets D3 from Walmart but I thought all they had was the oil based gel caps (not what we can use). If they're in white pills or powder in capsules, you're good. Of course you can always order from Vitalady once you're ready to start adding more vites. She carries the stuff that works for us at very reasonable prices.

Just curious (havn't had surgery yet) why can we use the gel caps for Vit D.  Or is this just for RNY patients?

Those of us with malabsorptive surgeries can't convert D2 to D3 and we malabsorb fats and oils. So RNYrs and DSrs have to go with dry vites and forms that don't have to be converted to usable form by the duodenum. A, D, E and K are the fat solubles we have to have in dry usable forms.

I believe you would be fine with them..RNY has malabsorbtion factor that is why we cannot take oil based capsuls. HTH...:)

Kiminey...I order the Calcium Citrate through VitaLady..it has all you need in it. ;)
