RANT- Tired of People Insinuating I'm Vain

Okay, I AM vain, but that's not the point. I'm having surgery because I'm morbidly obese. Not because I want to be model thin. People are intelligence challenged. I mean who the heck lets a surgeon cut into their bowels, and take out most of their stomach as a cosmetic procedure?? For the record, I'm having surgery because my lipid profile came back bad, and my mother is only 16 years older than me and has serious heart disease. Grrrrrrr. (End Rant)

Yep, that's the stuff that's whispered behind our backs or sometimes to our faces. I got to the point I listed my comorbidities right after I told a lab tech or what not that I was having WLS. I also chose to tell only family, medical folks and total strangers at first. Never the idgits at work.

Hang tough, sweetie.

If I had a smaller pair of pants for every time people have said that to me, I would be skinny!!
Screw them... I don't listen any more!

If I had a smaller pair of pants for every time they said it to me, I'd need to fill ALL the closets in the house with them!

As everyone has said, don't listen to the idiots.  You know why you're having this - and that's because you need it for health.

Quite honestly, I do care about my health, but I mostly care about my looks.

And I'm darned proud of that!

Being conscious of our appearance isn't the worst thing, IMO.

And vanity is fun!

At 61, I didn't do it to look better.  I really did do it because I couldn't continue as I had been and have the life I wanted to.  HOWEVER. looking better is sure fun too.  Folks don't see your bp going down or the fewer meds you take, they do see how you look.

I didn't have a whole lot of co-morbids like diabetes or hypertension, but I did have bad GERD and sleep apnea; and I am very vain. So what!! I hated looking in the mirror and seeing all that blubber,  wearing size 20W clothes, not being able to cross my legs, problems getting out of the car, etc.  I needed a solution, and KNEW  WW/exercise wasn't going to do it.  I tried that a cazillion times.  I have/had the right to make this decision...and the insurance company agrees!!!  They sure wouldn't pay for it if they thought it was just a cosmetic procedure!!!!  I was so excited when I found out I only had to have a BMI of 40 to qualify or 35 with co-morbids.  It didn't take me long to make a commitment to have surg.  I just had to sell my husband on it.  He is all about me making my own decisions and then supporting them, and making me happy.  I will have to say he didn't think I needed the surg, was happy with the way I looked (ugh), and was concerned he might loose me during the procedure, but it got on board and has been very proud of me....he had doubts as to whether I would follow through and be successful.  I showed him LOL....

I told almost everybody in the beginning, maybe as a way of saying, I am finally going to take the necessary steps to take of this problem.  I was surprised, a little, about the support AND lack of support of some folks.  Most seem to think WLS is only for the grossly morbidly obese, like we LWs don't deserve it.

End of soap box.

I think there are people out there who are narrow minded.. or just can't see beyond the "thinness and clothes" issue. They don't realize what carrying around a mass amount of weight does to our bodies, organs, joints, etc. What kind of diseases we carry along with it. Even other heavy people, who do have the same issues, become jealous because we are taking care of ourselves - when they may not have the fortitude to do it for themselves (ok, maybe money, insurance, etc).

Do it for YOU! Yes, the side benefit is looking good and buying smaller size clothes - we at least deserve that!!
