Anyone had any issues with insurance approvals on weight loss history where the BMI wasn't 35 for the past 3-5 years?

Mine went through with history no where near 35 for 3-5 years. Sounds like something Blue Cross Blue Shield does for folks trying to get the DS. They have to prove 50BMI or higher for 3-5 years...or at least they used to. Is that 3-5 year requirement somewhere in the small print on your policy requirements?

Info received from insurance coordinator. This is apparently normal for United Healthcare.

I don't think it is, actually. I know people who have used United Healthcare who didn't have to provide it.

It might be worth pushing back.

i GAVE MY PCP MY DIET HISTORY FROM 18 YEARS ON. FOR MANY YEARS I WAS NOT THAT HEAVY OR EVEN OBESE, BUT IT CLEARLY SHOWED HOW MY WEIGHT WAS NOT REGULATED. iT WAS IN GRAGH FORM, WITH THE WEIGHT ON LEFT OF GRAPH GOING FROM 110# UP TO 230#. oN BOTTOM FROM LEFT TO RIGHT i HAD YEARS OF AGE. i HAD EVERY DIET i DID ON IT AS WELL AS MY "DO NOTHING YEARS" i DIDN'T BOTHER WITH 1 DAY/WEEK/MONTH DIETS AS THERE ARE SIMPLY TOO MANY AND i TOLD HER THAT.  MANY OF MY DIETS WERE ON MY OWN, BUT SOME WERE DOCUMENTED SO I HIGHLIGHTED THOSE. NO ONE EVER ASKED FOR PROOF AND SOME OF THEM WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFICULT TO PROVE DUE TO HOW MANY YEARS AGO THEY WERE. I DIDN'T HAVE A HISTORY OF GOING TO MY PCP REGUARLY AS I WAS AWAYS SO EMBARRASSED BY MY CLIMBING WEIGHT, AND SHE EVEN MENTIONED THAT TO ME. I STRONGLY FEEL MY GRAGH I GAVE TO HER WAS INSTRUMENTA IN ME GETTING APRROVED. IT CLEARLY SHOWED ALL MY ATTEMPTS/SUCCESSES AND REGAINS OVER THE YEARS, AND MY DIETING/FAILURES WERE ESCALATING IN RECENT YEARS. I ALSO THINK IT MADE MY PCP'S JOB VERY EASY AS SHE ONLY HAD TO COMSULT MY GRAPH WHEN SHE WROTE A LETTER OFSUPPORT TO MY SURGEON.

i THINK BEING "OBESE" IS STILL UNDER 35BMI AND THAT WILL ALLOW THE DOCTOR TO WRITE UP A VERY GOOD LETTER OF RECOMENDATION. HOPE THIS HELPS.

ps My caps got locked and I didn't realize until this has 3/4 written, so I continued it "as is"!!!

I have BC/BS and I needed 1 comorbidity (sleep apnea for me) and a history of being obese for 5 years, yes. Obese doesn't start at 35 BMI.  And, like I stated, I didn't go to the doctor very often for me but was fairly regular at my GYN. I still was approved quite quickly from July 9th (1st surgeon seminar) til Oct 25. So even though it was crazy nerve wracking for me, it was quite fast.

When you say a history of obesity or they looking for BMI?  I have been overweight and obese according to the BMI index.

Would you be willing to share an example of this graph?  Perhaps I could put one together for my doctor and surgeon.

I gave a 10+ year history from my OB-GYN.  3 of those years I was below 35 BMI and I explained that I had been successful on Weigh****chers during those years.....believe me, my history DEFINITELY proved that I could LOSE the weight, just couldn't keep it off!

I was approved in 24 hours!!!

Best wishes!!!
