Tricked, not treated.... VSG people, need help

Today I went for my 1-month followup to the surgeon (though it was a little over 5 weeks with his schedule).  I only lost 1 pound last week.... guess the stall is on.  I could have wept!

I had NO and I mean ZERO candy or sweets through Halloween.  But, I did have a handful of chips 3 nights last week.

The surgeon told me, and so did the NUT, that starting back with my trainer probably triggered my body to go "WHOA!" and that the loss should start back up soon.  They also told me to quit with supplemental protein drinks and get my protein only from food as someone who has had the VSG has less need for protein than someone who has had a RNY.  So, I guess I have to go to bed hungry for the next several days.  I had really hoped those days were over..... this is not going to be easy no matter what, is it?

I am disappointed, but still determined to work this sleeve!

I would never suggest you go against your plan, but if I were you I would do some research.  My nut told me a "normal" person needs 72 g of protein a day to support their nutritional goals.  My plan rec 80 per day.  I don't have any research to back this up, but I have seen it written here 80 is the new gold standard.  My program is an center of excellence so most of their protocols are evidence bases.

If the shakes keep you from being hungry and keep you on track is there any specific harm.

I at this point can't eat enough food- but I would be jumping for joy if I could give up shakes.

Stay focused and the scale will move.  Way to go for getting back with your trainer.

You are also still healing from major surgery girlie.  Bodies heal better/faster with more protein.

Tell you what though, at 2 months out?  unless you have a tiny daily goal for protein, I do not think there is much of a way you are going to meet it.

Yes, definitely work the sleeve, but how many calories a day are you getting anyway?

Not telling you to go against doctor's advice, but really have a suspicious eyebrow towards your doctor and your nut!

Hi Kat, I know all Dr's are different. But I have to disagree with not eating/drinking protein. I will be a year out in Jan. At a month out I was just trying to eat anything soft I could get down. The amount was very little, I am able to eat a little more now but still not a lot. Always eat / drink your protein first. At a mo. out there would of been no way I could of ate a handful of chips it would of hurt going down for me. I still have a very hard time eating anything like that or noodles. Carbs in general are difficult. My opinion only...it took me forever to figure this out but finding a protein drink/powder or bars are going to help you a ton. I am shocked a Dr is telling you to get it through only food at that early of a stage. I no from experience I could never get my recommended amount in, and it wasn't until I figure out I can drink protein in coffee that now I am able to get the amount in daily I should be. I realize at your stage coffee is a no-no. But sugar free hot choc isn't. You could mix protein powder with a small amount of cold water and then add the hot choc. I think you saying you are going to bed hungry may be head hunger vs really hungry. But again, this may only be me...I have never been hungry since day one and still am not. I pretty much have to make myself eat. Make sure you are getting in a lot of liquids...sip all the time at something. Don't be disappointed this will work, but you must follow the rules for it to do so. Tell yourself waiting till 6 mo out is best to eat the old stuff you use to. I am a rule breaker now, at almost a year out I do have a small piece of cake at birthday or frozen yogurt or a small cookie. But honestly until at least 6-7 mo out I didn't eat one single thing that wasn't on my Dr's list. And I am sure things you use to love you will find in time you can't eat anymore at all, the smell even is horrible on things I use to love!
It will work  just give it time.!!! Hope this helps!

Thanks, y'all.  I never have trusted the NUT... she actually answered a few questions today because she had an intern with her but up to now she has been so indifferent.  I do like my surgeon but I think he has done far more RNY than VSG surgeries.  I will try to eat more protein rather than drink it and see how it goes.  I have had some days where I am not hungry at all but a few days I have really felt the hunger.

I declared my house a "no chip" zone yesterday.... we'll see if the DH will comply.  Wish me luck.

Thanks for caring and sharing.

Kat, congrats on being one month out.  Don't fret too much, the scale WILL start moving.  I wish you luck with your diet, it is hard, but yes doable.  Don't know what to tell you about your NUT/Dr advice on protein.  Mine doesn't care as long as I get it in, I don't think.  Anyway best wishes and continued success!!

I would add that you might want to consider adding a high protein snack in the evenings such as cheese or yogurt.  Going to bed hungry shouldn't have to happen IMHO.

Kat,
My NUT does not want us doing protein drinks either.  I tried to give them up and ended up eating a lot more in between meals and eating the wrong things.  I use the Syntrax Nectar per scoop it has 90 calories, no fats or carbs unless you mix it with something that has these.

I think we all have to find our own plan and schedule that works for us.  If you get hungry - you are probably going to eat something and maybe not the best choice.  Do you track your calories, carbs, fats and protein each day?  If you do and with your protein drinks you are within the guidelines then I would think it would be ok.

Jody gave us a great idea with the Greek Yogurt and there are several of us who have been altering it and fixing it a couple of different ways for our snacks.

Greek Yogurt, No Sugar Added Pie Filling, Sugar Free/Fat Free Pudding Mix, Splenda if you need it.  I add lite cool whip to mine.  Sometimes I leave out the pie filling and just put the other things in there.  The options are endless with this and it is really really good!!  Lots of protein.

I love chips too and tried to get DH to stop bringing them in the house - good luck to you - it hasn't worked at my house!!

Hang in there - you can do this!!

Kat, I'm about 8 weeks out and there is NO way that I could eat chips and not make myself sick. I have had problems with nausea and vomiting, but it is becoming less frequent.  I can only eat 1-1.5 ounces of protein at one time and have been trying to supplement with 2 shakes/day. I can't imagine trying to get all my protein from food at this point, much less at one month. I have difficulty getting in all my water and protein. For the past week, it has been easier to drink and I can take larger swallows than I used to be able to do.

Keep track of your protein and see, if you can get enough from food. I doubt that you can do that at this point in time. My program allows for protein shake replacement, until protein needs can be met with food.
