Need to adjust my vits - HELP!

I got part of my labs back.  I think I need to up my Vit D3 & Iron.  I need help from the vitamin gurus please.

My Vit D 25OH    was 71.   I currently take 12,000iu.  Should I increase that dosage and if so how much?  I found biotech D3-50 50,000IU capsules.   My concern with the biotech - is that dosage too high?   12,000 isnt keeping my levels high enough but will 50,000 be too much?  Should I try doubling my dosage to see what happens or should I just go for the 50,000?

My Iron was 64 and my ferritin was 57.  I currently take Feosol Carbonyl iron 90mg.   How much should I increase that dosage to?

I think everything else looked good so far.   My B12 was 2000.  Protein 7.2  Calcium 9.9

My Alk Phos was marked high at 114.  I have no idea what that is.   My thyroid was out of whack too, we have adjusted my synthroid dosage and will retest in 3 months.

If there's any others numbers you need to know, just ask.  Thanks!  Cindy

I take 50,000 of Vit D3 (biotech) tables.  I take one every other day.  Thanks for reminding me though - I haven't seen my updated labs.  I need to call the Dr's office.

Your B12 is awesome!

Your iron, yes is low. I take Ferritin (sp) - get from Vitalady.  Its friendlier with other vits and doesn't care as much if you take it too close to calcium (still not directly with it though).  Its gentler to your system too (doesn't bind you up like the other).  I'm not good at taking my iron, that's why mine's lower too... but this is the one Gina recommends.

Gina will chime in with questions about the others...

Hey Cindy, my thyroid was low...I know I have an enlarged thyroid gland but this is the first time the labs came back with a ping about thyroid. Surgeon said he'll watch for it next time...any insight would be great :)

I take D3 liquid (5 drops from dropper on my tongue or you can add it to liquid). Vitamin Shoppe brand. My D3 levels rose 20points from last labs of 84 to 114. Oh, sorry, that's 30 pts...can't count...lol It's 5,000 iu's daily. Since D is fat soluble it's gonna go as you lose the fat/weight...so you may be fine increasing your intake until you stabalize your weight loss and reach goal...just my 2cents. Let's wait for the gurus :)

That is an awesome D3 level. I think I'll take a look at those drops next time I'm in VitaminShoppe. It still might be more economical for me to take the capsules and sublinguals but the drops sound very interesting.

Thanks Gina...the drops are $9.99 @ Vitamin Shoppe. It says take like 5 drops in liquid beverage but I just pour the dropper on my tongue. It's a little bitter but I do it first thing in the morning and take my chewable C's right after...no harm no foul. I bet you could add the drops to a little bit of juice (low sugar kind) or whatever cold drink...
They also have sublinguals but I'm gonna stick with what's working well for me right now...

I didnt know we could take liquid D3.  I was always told dry ..... because we cant absorb the gel/oil kind.  I assumed we couldnt do liquid either.  never assume huh?!  lol   Cindy

Ya...no go on the gel/oil stuff. I was taking chewable D3 (peppermint) and my levels were good. The bottle was $10.99 @ Vitamin Shoppe. I think I switched to the dropper because every 6 months Vitamin Shoppe has buy 1 get the other 1/2 off sale (April and October) and I switched to their brand which was the dropper stuff. So far based on my labs, I feel very comfortable with their vitamins. I get all of them through them and get a rebate back at the end of each year (in-store shopping credit which should be around $150 now...whoo hoo)

Assume?? Always a 50/50 shot right? LOL

I'd keep taking the carbonyl if it isn't bothering your system, and as Jody mentioned, Proferrin ES is something that will work with your other vites. I take a combo of carbonyl iron in the afternoon and a Proferrin ES at bedtime. That combo gave me a huge jump on my last 2 labs for iron, ferritin, hemoglobin and hematocrit.

Check out Vitalady's site for dry D3. Her "Tender" label is on BioTech vitamins D and A but it's BioTech. I think Jody's approach is fine (50,000IUs every other day) and it's likely very economical as well.

Did they run your parathyroid hormone (PTH)? You need to see PTH, calcium and D to know how your calcium is being absorbed. Your calcium is a tad high. How much calcium citrate and magnesium citrate do you take a day?

I dont see PTH.  The med assistant told me they were still waiting for a few results.  Calcium citrate - I take 2000 a day.  Do I need to cut that back a little?  I dont take any mag citrate.  Thanks Gina!   Cindy

Actually, I think 2000mg is great and the only thing you might want to do is add 140mg mag cit when you take your calcium. Mag Cit helps with calcium absorption and foot cramps. Lets wait on the PTH if it below 30, you're probably just fine doing what you're doing with calcium.
