Frustrated

I am a year out, and have lost 80 pounds.  While I am thrilled with my progress, I would like to lose 20-30 pounds more.  That having been said, I have fallen off the wagon BIG TIME.  My husband lost his job last month, and I have been relieving my stress by baking, mostly banana and pumpkin breads. I try to use whole wheat flour, and am experimenting with replacing sugar with agave nectar, but still NOT a good idea.  Also, I had to quit my health club (again, job loss), and I have used that as an excuse not to exercise.    Looks like my lacksadaisal ways are catching up with me - I have been stuck at the same weight since August.  Not only that - this week I saw my weight jump about 7-8 pounds higher than normal.  It is weird, I am seeing a gin of a few pounds a day!

It's enough to scare me straight.  I am logging my food (7-900 cals a day on average), walking like a fiend, drinking fluids, etc.  I am just worried that, being a year out, this is it and I have blown my chance to reach goal.

Wow!  Sounds like you're going through it. Good for you for admitting it!

Have you tried the 5 day pouch test?  I don't have any details, but know it has been successful for many people.  I'm sure that if you google it you can find it.

Good luck!

I have  been where U are  I think  .....my downfall was the all U can eat buffets  "healthy " baking at home  and grazing lol...but the  REAL downfall is  falling back into using food-as-drugs  or food -for-comfort  as opposed to eating  only  when were hungry and stopping when were full  ( and choosing the right non  serotonin  releasing things ) .

Overeater's anonymous  really helped me get my  continuing compulsive overeating under control.

A temporary fix  which wont make U  skinnier but will definitely slow the GAIN  is NEVER to put  oil or  butter  or any form of fat  in the  baked goods -  just use water  .  They come out fine .    U can use a little butter buds if U want 4 taste  .   Check the recipe  way earlier and frequently  for doneness though - U dont want to overcook  at all or  they will be dry .

Splenda  is a great  sweetener  for baking and I believe its  no cal .  Even brown sugar splenda has half the calories of regular sugar  I believe  and the same properties as brown sugar  .

Theres another great product out called  fat free promise margarine  made with olean .   terriffic for  baking where U HAVE to use fat ...  like crumbles ...and crusts ..but  THIS fat goes right through U.

Its  devilishly difficult to  find  ( everyone carries the "light " version NOT  the same thing lol)   but it freezes great so i clean off the shelf when i rarely  manage to find it  .  .  Makes awesome fatfree sugar free   toll house  /oatmeal  cookies  too  and strudel  lol .

Just because  they make our tummies smaller  doesnt mean they solve our head hunger  issues lol !

The very sobering statistics on WLS reflect this -  the average  bariatric candidate has 200 lbs to lose , loses  60%  of that excess weight in the first 18 months , then regains most of it in the following years.     Eight years later the average  loss is only 46 lbs..

So I at least  continue to have a healthy fear of and respect for my compulsive overeating disease
...and don't begrudge the time every day  to work on keeping it controlled.

Good luck !

I hear your pain and fear, but it sounds like you are back on track if you are eating 700-900 calories and walking a lot!!!  I you stick with that you are BOUND to keep loosing.  Hope you are getting enough protein, you didn't mention that...it does help with hunger.

Sorry about your husband loosing his job...a VERY stressful situation.  Hope he finds another position quickly.

Keep in touch with your re to your progress.

It sounds to me like you've identified what has triggered your relapse and are getting back on track - and that's really the most important thing!!  Good for you!

Now - weight jumping by 7-8 lbs?  That seems like a lot - have you eating some high sodium foods lately?  I know when I eat sushi with the soy sauce - I can see it on the scale!!

But I agree, you need to stop baking.  Its a very slippery slope - we can convince ourselves its ok - but its really not.

Hang tough there!  You'll get through it and back on track!

Glad you shared with us!!   Sorry about your DH losing his job.

It is definitely not to late to get back on track and get the weight back off.  It might not come off as fast as it did the first time but be patient, follow the rules, and listen to your tool and I think you will get if off.

I was still losing at a year out and at 2 years out, I still have a lot of restriction (some days more than others).

Doing the 5 Day Pouch test might really help.  I haven't tried it but I think it helps get you off of carbs.

Hi, I'm so glad you decided to post.  For me, if I'm having a difficulty, it's always better to bring it into the light of day instead of trying to keep it a secret.

Putting a halt to the baking before the holiday season is really stomping on us might be helpful so that you're not getting the added stress at home.  Being out in the world during the holidays is enough temptation for any of us.

I'm sorry about the causes of this stress in your life.  You're not alone during this economic downturn and you have my full sympathy.

I read this on the VSG board.  It's for busting plateau's.  Maybe it would help you get  some weight off quickly which is always a boost.

Congrats on getting back to a good calorie level and great on getting in exercise and fluids!  You're going to be just fine if you keep your focus.  Please come around here more often!  :)

I'm sorry you are going through this rough time.  I also turn to comfort food in times of stress.  But you are going to get into trouble with the baking right now.  Even if you make some healthier substitutions, if you are like me, you will probably stand at the kitchen counter and eat one slice of that damn bread after another until all that's left are crumbs.  Then not only will you be depressed over your dh's job situation, but you'll be down on yourself over your eating too.

Try to find other things to keep your hands and mouth busy.  Knitting? needlepoint? Chew gum?  Some nights when I want want want oral gratification I will go through an entire large pack of gum just to keep myself from putting food in my mouth instead.  Gee, maybe I ought to just put duct tape over my mouth!  haha.  Maybe you can get a friend to go walking with you a couple of times a day.

You have worked too hard to throw away your weight loss because of this temporary stressful situation. Good luck and check back in here whenever you need a boost.

I'm so sorry things aren't going well for you!

Have you considered calling the office for some further assistance? I know some patients have issues with Liz, but Sherri, who is new, seems to be almost universally liked.

Sorry you are going through this and that your husband lost his job.

I think you are taking the right steps to get back on track.  Logging my food helps me to be accountable.  I also post on the Menus and Miles and read this everyday for great ideas.  Do you do protein drinks.  They can really help you up your protein.  I use the Syntrax Nectar and it does not have any carbs or fats in it.

I got caught up in the cookies and still have a hard time with them sometimes.

Hang in there - you can do this!!
