What happened to me last night??!

Did I have a dumping episode last night or was it hypoglycemia? I was at one of those haunted hayride places with my dh and a group of 14-yr-olds.  While waiting in line I scarfed down 1/2 a bag of kettle korn. I have had it a couple of times since surgery and nothing ever happened (except for feeling guilty!)  About 45 minutes later I was still standing in line for the hayride and I got extremely dizzy. I stumbled a bit when I walked and the sound of my voice sounded strange in my head. My vision was strange and my head felt cold and clammy, but I was not perspiring. I sat on a bench for a few minutes and the symptoms went away.  I got up again and the same thing happened. I came close to fainting 5 times. Each time I tried to stand up I started getting woozy again.  Finally, I sent the kids and hubby off on the hayride and some guys helped me over to the warming hut where I sat and was ok. It was still bothering me an hour later, but I made it to the car. So I was fine as long as I was sitting, but standing brought it on.  And I am fine today. Was this WLS related or something unrelated?
Thank you!

No expert here and I know that had to be scary. If it's reactive hypoglycemia, some folks recommend keeping peanut butter crackers handy to help clear it up. Glad you're feeling better today.

I don't really dump, never have.  But there are a few things that will cause my heart to race and then I will generally feel like crap.  I also haven't experience any of the reactive hypoglycemia symptoms.  I have however on many occasions had problems with dehydration and have had all of the symptoms you have mentioned up to and including blacking out or at least I thought dehydration was the culprit.  I would definitely keep an eye on it and like Gina said keep the PB crackers or some other handy protein/carb snack with you all the time.

Take care-

Julie

I have Reactive Hypoglycemia. What you explained doesn't really sound like dumping to me.  When I dumped I got an icky feeling, tired and want to go to sleep usually.  Some people get sick and nauseated.  I have also gotten dizzy too when I dumped.

Reactive Hypoglycemia - is from simple carbs being released into your intestines too early.  My "episodes" happen when I drink alcohol and eat simple carbs - a combination I just can't afford to do anymore.  It does almost sound like it could be it... but, when I don't eat something when I have an episode, it will stick around for a long time.  It can take up to 2 hours before you feel the effects of what yuo ate too.  My symptoms didn't go away until i ate something.

It could also be dehydration like Julie said.

Be very careful with this - next time you feel something like this happening, have something with some sugar in it - like gina said.  I know it seems counterproductive, but your blood sugars drop when that happens and you need to bring them up. It can be dangerous - so be careful!  It takes about 5-10 minutes once you eat something to feel better.  But I still take a nap almost every time it happens.

Thanks, Rosa. I just mentioned to Lee, I think Prancer and Jane diagnosed it correctly as dehydration. I'm not sure why it hit me like that, but since I have been pushing fluids, I have not had any more symptoms. I've never experienced anything like that before. I'm glad I was around some nice folks who helped me out! Thanks for your warm wishes!

Weird, huh? I think Prancer and Jane called it accurately. I think it's dehydration. I didn't see that coming, but i'm gonna push the fluids big time. Thanks so much for your warm wishes.

I have had something similar to this happen to me, but it was not as bad as yours.  I was shopping, felt lightheaded and just out of it!   My husband was with me and he said I was in sort of a daze.   I had not had anything to drink in a while, so I blamed it on dehdration.  As soon as I got something to drink I felt better in just a little while.

Have you checked your blood pressure lately?  I know that if it is low and you stand up you can get very woozy, dizzy etc because the brain is not getting oxygenated.
