Did your family give you a hard time?

Thank you everyone for your incredibly encouraging responses!!! My boyfriend and I have sat down and talked a number of times and there are a whole bunch of issues that he has, but I know that the doctor will address all of his concerns at my consultation next Friday. As a personal trainer and medical student, he has a lot of questions about getting the right amount of nutrients and long term effects on my hormones (ability to conceive in the future, etc.), which I think are all valid concerns!

I do think part of it is him feeling like he has failed me. He has been able to help so many other people with their weight loss battles, why not me? We have tried on a number of occasions to do it together, but we always wind up back where we started - chinese food!!

I think the other part of it is that he watched my mom have the surgery, and he watched her take it too far and lose TOO much weight to the point where she was making herself sick. I think having seen a bad example of what the surgery can do to people is making him fearful that I will react the same way.

I do think that after he meets the doctor and is allowed to ask the questions that I don't know the answers to he will come around. Again, I told him I don't need his approval or acceptance, I just need his support and love. We have been living together for over 2 years now, and I want to spend the rest of my life with him - happy and healthy!!

I am 59 years old and I wish I would have done it years ago.  When BMI gets over 30, co-morbidities start showing up.  I think you would be very smart to look into the surgery and see what your options are.  Or, you could do what alot of us have tried.  Lose the weight through hard work, dieting and exercising, enjoy a few years of lower weight, then slowing gain it back, plus more, repeat, repeat, repeat, and suddenly you're 100+ lbs overweight.
