Domestic Violence

Hi everyone! I have been very busy at work and away from the board lately.

I am a social worker and I work primarily with Domestic Violence survivors. Domestic violence is both a local and global epidemic. During October, we take the opportunity to call awareness to the issue and to mourn those whose lives have been cut short due to domestic violence. We also celebrate the courage of survivors and renew our commitment to creating a world free of abuse.

Domestic Violence is best understood as a pattern of abusive behaviors including physical, sexual and psychological attacks as well as economic coercion used by one partner against another to gain, maintain or regain power and control in the relationship.

To find help for you or someone you know call the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800- 799-SAFE(800-799-7233). This can safe someone life!

I know this email is off topic, but maybe can be helpful to someone. I hope you are all safe! Take care

I've been a "friend" of a domestic violence shelter for many years and one of my sons is a trained domestic violence counselor.  There is no more noble cause to support than this one!

People's misconceptions about who the victims of DV are are really rampant.  You would be AMAZED at the number of ministers' wives, executives' wives, professors' wives, etc. who are victims as well as the underprivileged.

Katchikat, thanks much for posting this topic!

DV has no class boundaries.  I was in my first marriage - it was an emotional/psychological abuse.  A control and verbal abusive issue....  it really covers a larger spectrum than most people think.  They usually think of only physical or sexual abuse, but emotional abuse, I believe, is even wider spread - and don't think that is reported nearly as much as it should be.  People just don't realize that's what it is...

My DD lived through DV and I didn't have any idea how bad it was until we were sitting in the Lawyers office discussing child custody.  She still has the mental scars from it.

Thanks for sharing!

Been there and done that with my first spouse.  Both physical and mental.  I never reached out for help because I was so embarassed and always felt like I had done something to make it happen.  Would still be there if I hadn't gotten so afraid for my life one night.  The scars from this never ever go away.
Thank goodness I got out of it and met my DH 32 years ago and that changed my life.
I have spoken with several people and tried to help them get out of bad situations.
