If you could give a new person to WLS a tip from your own experience, what would it be?

Tip:  Research your WLS options. Know the pros and cons of each WLS option. Know yourself and whether you can live with the lifestyle changes required by each surgery option. Don't believe everything a surgeon says about WLSs he doesn't perform and don't let the surgeon pick your surgery for you. If you pick your surgery, you have a better chance of making it work for you.

Good topic! We have a lot of new members lately.

Tip #1: Drink and eat SLOW after surgery. Use baby spoons for your soups, etc. Wait between drinks and bites. Avoid getting the foamies and pain. It's hard, but you kind of have to re-learn how to eat.

Tip #2: To be successful, follow the rules. Avoid carbs, protein, protein, protein. The first "cheat" makes it so much easier to cheat again and to get back on track...so don't do it the first time. Get up and get movin'. It is proven that long term success is associated with people who make exercise a part of their life.

Tip #3: Have support. It can be at home from family or friends, support group meetings, right here on OH, or all of the above. The more support you have, the better off you will be.

Mine would be: DONT compare your weight loss/journey to others.  We all walk the path at a different rate.  You WILL get to the finish line at your own pace.   Cindy

Pick your surgeon group carefully.  Be sure they will give you the information you need before, during and after surgery.  Do they have a Nut on staff, a Psych?  Do you have access to the Dr when you need it.

Hi, my tip is not for immediately post-op but in first few months:
Make sure you are getting all your fluids in.  Yes, everyone tells you that and you "know it" bu****ch for symptoms of nausea or inability to eat, these are signs of dehydration.  Once you are getting all your fluids in foods go down easier and taste better!

Like Gina said, research your WLS options and make sure you are committed to taking your vitamins and getting your protein daily, for the rest of your life.

Don't buy too many clothes at smaller sizes as you are losing, and be sure to visit thrift stores - they're a goldmine!

Be sure to MEASURE your food early out, as you may not have the feeling of "fullness" and can possibly damange your pouch and stoma.

DO NOT drink for at least 30 minutes AFTER eating - this is SO important.  It wasn't explained to me why, now I know... it can stretch your stoma out and if that happens, you may end up with a 20' stomach, and won't feel full or satisfied!

Great thread!

Don't test the waters any earlier than your surgeon/nut advises.  The plans are in place for a reason.  Also, wait as long as possible (or never) to add back food that is carby or a trigger to you.  I found when I didn't have it, I didn't miss it.  Now that I've added things back, I'm wanting them again, but at least in much smaller quantities.

TAKE YOUR VITAMINS!

Search and Search for a Protein Drink that you like!!  It's very important to get your Protein in and making it a habit.  I believe that Protein is the key to losing and maintaining after WLS.

Believe it when they say the honeymoon period comes to and end!!!!!  Newbies, understand that it is your tool working during the honeymoon period that helps you lose weight.  Don't fall into the "I can eat anything" trap.  Follow the rules!!!  Watch your portions....MEASURE your food!!  Don't believe it when you can eat cookies and cake and not gain....it is your tool working....and it will catch up with you because you will become hooked again. Avoid Sweets and Bad carbs like Potatoes, Bread, and Pasta as long as you can!!!

I know some of you don't agree with this but if you try to get your Protein in with food YOU ARE GOING TO OVEREAT!!!  Maybe not at the beginning, but as you increase your calories in food it is going to happen and you will be one of those who write "I know I'm not getting all of my Protein in".

#1 Don't compare yourself to anyone else.

#2 Exercise daily

#3 Have  support groups where people understand what you're going through.  Post here daily and don't run away if the going gets rough.  That's when we need support the most.

#4  Take measurements and pictures monthly because they often reveal more than the scale does.

Opps, I guess that was more than 1  :)
