Shoved the Cat Out of the Bag!
It's pretty difficult to keep a secret at my workplace. If you tell one person, you might as well figure it's going all over. So yesterday I decided to be proactive send out an email to my closest friends at work (about 10 people) to tell them about my surgery. I even provided a link to OH so they could read up on VSG so I wouldn't have to explain it all.
Everyone would know something is up because I'll be training someone to do my job while I'm out, and I'll have to be leaving for tests and appointments. I didn't want people to think I have a serious illness, and I didn't want to tell a fib about what type of procedure I would be having. I'm not very good at white lies.
Thus far I've gotten supportive responses. I hope that everyone is understanding, and that they don't think I'm doing this purely for vanity's sake. For me, I feel relieved to have it out in the open.

Good for you! I tell everyone but those old dudes at work. lol Your way is probably best and you know you could get positive and negative feedback. Some people tell folks and think everyone will be positive and are surprised and hurt when they're not.

You're right. I'm going to have to brace myself for the negative comments I hear either directly or by word of mouth.
I think my closest friends will be supportive even if they think I shouldn't do it. I've already heard the comment of "I like you just the way you are." However, I shouldn't assume that even my closest friends will be good about it.

I told just about everybody too, and was surprised at some of the responses. Most were skeptical or concerned, and told me stories about folks who had it done and then regained their weight. But, I have sure gotten a LOT of positive feedback since the weight has come off. I too have difficulty telling "white lies", so honesty has always been my best way to go. Now I just have to prove all those skeptics wrong AND not regain!!!
Hope you get the support you need out there, you've always got it here!!!

My co-workers knew, too. I figured they'd guess anyway when I started dropping weight like crazy. I was lucky because they've all been very supportive. But even if they hadn't been supportive, it wouldn't have mattered to me.
And, coincidentally, I found out that one lady I work with was also having RNY done by the same surgeon that was doing mine. We ended up having surgery the same day. So we were right down the hall from each other while we were in the hospital. We did our laps around the ward together.
