To tell or not to tell

I tell good friends straight up that it was WLS. Other people I know I tell the truth - just not as straight. I tell them that I had several metabolic issues that required surgery (absolutely true), and that the weight loss is a side effect of that surgery. I then tell them that if I can keep my head out of my a**,eat properly and exercise, I can stay like this.

So far, it's been fine with everyone. A couple people have been pushy, but I just look at them with a puzzled expression, and they back off.

Could I be straight up with everyone and say it was gastric bypass? Yeah, and then I get all the idiocy. This way, it's metabolic surgery for medical issues - just not specifically named. It saves me a whole lot of trouble, and if someone came to me with the issues that punchynerd had, I would definitely describe the surgery, explain that it IS a weight loss surgery for many people, and be upfront. I just don't want to feed the trolls at work.

Honestly, it depends.
If it is someone I really trust (friends and family) then I am very open about it all. They have been a great support.
If it is someone from the neighborhood or work and they ask (mainly as in wanting to make sure I am not "sick" or have cancer or some such thing) I tell them simply "I am losing weight with a doctors supervision".
It's NOT a lie and it's still respecting privacy....(Well I am losing weight with my bariatric doctors supervision and blessing!)
Now if I met someone else who asked or really wanted to know, and I sensed that telling them about the surgery would help them or what not, then yes...Of course I would tell them about the RNY and WLS.
But I don't go up to any ol' strangers or talk causually about it in restaurants or doctors offices. ;)
Warmly,
Jackie
