NEWBIE TO THE BOARD
Hi everyone! I'm brand new to this. I'm going ahead with VSG through weightloss forever in Saskatoon, SK. Don't have a date yet, but I'm hoping in the next few months or so.... Just filled out the medical today. I'm a lightweight BMI......Right now I'm at 161 pounds, 5'1". My weight tends to fluctuate between 160-170.....BMI fluctuates between 30-31.5. Right now I'm at just over 30. It depends on the season, time of the month, etc. Highest weight 200 pounds.
I've been "lurking" on some of the posts, and notice that you don't eat a whole lot. I know after the surgery you can't eat very much, but what about a year after? I've done tons of research on the surgery itself and what happens there, but I'm kind of concerned about what I will be able to eat in the long run. Will I ever be able to eat Steak and Potatoes again? LOL......
Any info would be great....even if you can direct me to a website that may have this info. Thanks! Looking forward to being a new member of the board!

You ask a VERY good question. Most of the focus is on losing weight and eating healthy. Not much discussion by Dr's and NUTS at the early phase about long term eating and weight maintenance. I know I haven't spoken to my NUT since 2 weeks after my surgery. Basically, I had 6 months with her for free, then my membership ran out - LOL...
I didn't have VSG but RNY. I am almost 2 years out and can eat pretty much anything I want. Yes, I DO eat steak and veggies, but now I don't eat the potatoes (much anyway). If it comes with mean/potato I ask to substitute the veggie and am always told yes.
I know when I went to my NUT classes, they gave me the impression I would NEVER eat anything good ever again. It was really a scare tactic, I believe.
I do believe in the mantra "its not about deprivation, but about moderation"...

Today we went out to eat and I had most of a pork chop, a couple of bites of veggies and a couple of bites of garlic mashed potatoes. I brought the rest home in a box and will eat it for lunch two more days.
Basically, I can eat whatever I want if I am careful and chew it well. But I eat a lot more healthy foods that I used to and am much more aware of what I put in my mouth. Many foods that I used to eat, just don't seem worth it any more. They have too many artificial ingredients or the calories are completely out of proportion to their enjoyment factor.

I worried about the same things as you, but now that I'm at goal my mindset has made a complete turn around. I LOVE being thin and food just isn't that important anymore!!!!!!
There isn't any meat that I can't eat if it's moist enough. I can have potatoes, but very seldom do. I LOVED fried potatoes before WLS, but from not having them for so long, all I taste is the grease now. I ate mashed potatoes at the beginning because they went down easy, but other than a bite or 2, they don't call my name anymore.
Best of Luck....Keep us Posted!!!!
