Im curious about some of the privacy settings.   For example..... if I go to someones page (someone who is NOT on my friends list) ..... sometimes I can see everything.  Some people however have it set to where you cant see their friends list or their wall ect.   How do I set mine like that?  Thanks!  Cindy

Cindy and Rosa...
Facebook is still having problems with their privacy settings, as evidenced in their new Places application that came out in August.  People pounced on it immediately, but I still don't trust them.  And after seeing the movie Social Network, is it any wonder that Zuckerberg would throw his FB users under the bus in order to increase his bottom line?

And now there is a big fat legal quagmire brewing that finds us all subject to the kind of public dirty laundry airing I'm not sure I'm ready for....
Here is an example of the latest in court room drama, where people are having their private Facebook chats subpoenaed in court cases and used against them....

It's a brand new world ladies.  I'm taking my chances and still choosing to use Facebook, but forewarned... it could come back to haunt you.

I'm not a big fan of Zuckerberg as I don't think he understand privacy. But I feel compelled to point out that about 85% of The Social Network is total fiction.

I would love to know the facts. My father-in-law has been singing the praises of Zuckerberg since reading The Facebook Effect and he even bought a copy for each of  the grandchildren.   He said it is an exemplary model of how to take an idea and build it into a business.  But that sure isn't how the story was portrayed in the movie!   So what is the truth?  Please tell!

As I said, I'm not a Zucherberg fan. But there have been tons of articles in the mainstream press about everything the movie got wrong. Some I remember off the top of my head:

-Harvard is nothing like it's portrayed
-Zuckerman's personality and every day mannerisms are nothing like how he's portrayed
-Key story points in the movie just never happened

Sorkin has been pretty upfront that he didn't let facts stand in the way of telling a good story. That is pretty much his style. I think it's a shame because the real story was good enough to be made into a movie. There was no reason to be so inaccurate about pretty much everything.

But Stacey, just so that you are aware..... anything you write on Facebook, even in a private message, could be subpoenaed in a court of law and used to smear your character or credibility. That is why I posted the article above.  Lawyers are routinely using subpoenas to get into private messages in order to discredit a defendant or plaintiff. They are used in divorce proceedings, personal injury cases - civil litigation of all kinds. That is everyday legal stuff that you or I might easily find ourselves in.  In one recent case, a guy was suing Walmart for an injury he sustained on the job.  Walmart got tipped off that the guy's wife had complained to a friend that her husband was lazy.  Walmart's lawyers subpoenaed her Facebook private messages to obtain these comments and Facebook was required to hand them over. The lawyer's managed to use the wife's comments to successfully discredited the guy.

I love my Facebook too.  And I post a lot in private messages. It's a risk I am willing to take. I'm just trying to pass along information in case others have not seen the same cautionary articles.
