Observation: No FAT people at the Farmer's market!!
Since I am on Fall Break this week and didn't go anywhere, My daughter and I have tried to plan a few local excursions. Today we drove into Atlanta (about 45 minutes) and went to a FABULOUS International Farmer's Market (for those of you Georgia people it's the Dekalb International Farmer's Market in Decatur).
I grew up near this market and we went three times a week when I was a kid. It's indoors and is bigger than a football field! I have really been into WHOLE foods since my RNY because that's where I get the most bang for my nutritional buck.
I went a little crazy...$208.00 crazy but I got TONS of fresh, WHOLE foods like:
~produce (they have just about every fruit and veggie known to man) I bought too much to fit in
my fridge and I had to store some at my Mom's
~local brown eggs
~local cheese
~whole grain pasta (made on site)
~almond and peanut butter that I ground myself
~trout, salmon, flounder (they cut the head off and fileted it right in front of me...FRESH!!)
~turkey sausage
~some South African Rooibos tea (that I LOVE)
~three bottles of red wine from Spain (currently my favorite region for reds)
~spices and herbs to cook with...
I can't wait to get cooking! I'm obsessed with good food right now....let's hope it lasts!
ANYWAY...the whole point to this thread is that I didn't see the first obese person at this market (besides me! :)......generally, it's an effort (and somewhat expensive) to eat healthy and correct but it pays off!
I vowed to try to shop here at least once a month....my whole family eats better when there are good choices in the house.
Dinner tonight: broiled flounder, roasted roma tomatoes with basil/garlic, zucchuni, quinoa with feta/herbs and some whole grain bread....oh yeah and maybe a sip of red wine afterwards!!
Have a great day everyone!!!

Sounds awesome, Peyton! I'm going to get my produce from a local Asian grocer today. From what I've seen they put Whole Foods to shame. Anyway, let's enjoy this great fresh food!

Wow - that sounds yummy! I need someone to come cook for me...
We have a farmers market in the summer - but its usually just fresh veggies, flowers, home made jams, cookies, etc. I didn't even make it there this year... bad me...

Wow Peyton you did some shopping!! That sounds like fun. A couple of people I work with go there when they are in the Atlanta area and love it. I've never been.
I love almost all kinds of fresh veggies now - that I would not even taste before surgery. I just went and bought me a butternut squash to make some butternut squash soup.

I am a huge fan of eating clean, there is a support board on OH for that. Also the focus at the New England Culinary Institute where I teach is "farm to table" meaning we educate students about this kind of eating and cooking and we strive to have the least amount of distance between the food on our tables and the farms it came from.
I grew up eating highly processed foods. It wasn't until I began teaching at NECI that I began to examine my relationship with food and realized it was either a friend or foe. I've made friends with food over the past six years. I doubt I would have had WLS if not for going to work there. Eating the way you describe is a great way to get healthy.
It is more expensive. What we need is fundamental food policy changes such as the Child Nutrition Act that was recently in front of Congress. The Farm Bill needs to change so it is more afforadable to buy good food rather then junk food.
