I have a date! And a panic attack!!

I have a date with Dr. Aceves.  I should be jumping up and down, but you know what, I AM SCARED TO FREAKING DEATH!!  I am sure I won't sleep tonight.  I guess it's that this is real now.  I have never been under general anethesia.  When I had my c-section, I had a spinal block and IV pain meds.  It was a piece of cake.  I was up and walking around later that evening.  Dr. Aceves's team does a spinal shot, but I don't know if thats the anethisia or what.  I am waiting to hear back from  the coordinator.

And when you are on clear liquids, how do you get protein.  Is there clear protein?

So many questions are running through my brain right now!!! And oh, what I would do for some reassurance!!   HELP!!

Hang out with us and start asking questions. It will be ok, get your answers today and let us know what they say.

When you're on clear liquids, and even full liquids, fluids are your number 1 priority and protein is second. Start now building up your protein so that you have good stores in your body prior to surgery. There are protein bullets that are considered clear liquid. New Whey is one and I believe there are others out there. But if you start on food quality protein shakes now, you'll have what you need to get you through. As soon as you're ok for full liquids you can start back on protein shakes. I'd suggest you take a look at Vitalady's web site and order some samples of protein shakes or if you already know some you like, get them from VitaminShoppe or GNC.

Are you getting the VSG?  Let me know which surgery and I'll link you to Vitalady's appropriate vitamin plan.

Here is a link to Vitalady's ideas to help get you ready as a pre-op: https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AU46vLsRDC9rZGhranhtcXpfM TNneHpzZmhkbQ&hl=en

Hang tough, babeee!

Congratulations!!!!  I must be a little loopy this morning....when I read your thread title I was thinking "DATE"--like with a man!  I guess I'm a boring old married woman cause I was getting excited about reading all about it!!!

ANYWAY....I'm so glad you have a SURGERY date!!!  There is a "clear" protein called ISOPURE...it comes in glass bottles at GNC.  It looks like Gatorade.  I found it quite disgusting but others tolerate it well.

Gina is right....you should focus on water/general fluids first.  You won't really feel like drinking or eating.  Just do the best you can.  I sipped on protein shakes and water all day the first week but didn't meet my requirement for either....it gets better/easier with time!!

BEST wishes!!

Robin,
First, congratulations!  This is important and exciting news!  And yes, even scary.  Such a major life change is big and it's good that you take it so seriously.
Second, these are great questions!  They are the kinds of questions your medical team will help you think through, so just go on through with their process.  We could answer questions (and will) but it's clear that there's some basic information you'll need to get from the team first.  Like what's your food progression plan?  Some start with clear liquids only for a few days before surgery, then immediately progress to purees in the hospital.  (that was the case for me.) Your team will have ideas of the best way to get your protein in for the different stages.
So my advice is to get clear on your team's plan to start (just because there are so many different options, and we don't want to steer you the wrong way).  Then, c'mon over here and ask anything that isn't clear.
One piece of practical advice:  Vitalady's samples are a Godsend.  I would not recommend making your protein choices pre-surgery, though.  What I could tolerate before my RNY and after completely changed!  Thank God I saved those samples for after surgery, because then I could make a choice for what worked on my new pouch.
Unjury's chicken broth protein got me through clear liquids with lots of protein all ready for surgery.  THEN, after surgery, I couldn't tolerate all the sodium in it.  Go figure!
So glad to hear from you and look forward to accompanying you on this journey!

Congrats on your appointment!
I would recommend doing as much research as you can. Knowledge is power.
Weight loss surgery for Dummies is a great resource and Barbara Thompson wrote a great book too that gives her real life account of surgery.  Weight loss surgery, finding the thin person inside of you is the title, she also has a web site.
Good luck!

Congratulations on getting your date Robin.  When is it???  What type of surgery are you having?
You have already gotten great advise on the protein.  I ordered lots of samples from Vitalady.  My taste changed dramatically after surgery so I would wait and try them after you have your surgery.
Your surgeon should give you a plan with each progression of liquids/food.  I would try to follow it as close as possible.  Ever surgeon is different.
I think we were all a little scared and excited at the same time.  I had 2 c-sections(one totally out and one spinal).  My RNY was nothing compared to them.  I was up walking that night also, but everyone is different.
Good luck and keep us updated.

Robin-  I too have a date with Dr Aceves- When is your surgery set for.  My understanding is that a combination of anesthesia- General plus spinal pain relief shot is used.  Let me know if that isn't the case cause I will have more questions.  I too am finding that I am a little scared and nervous.  Kinda like when you get married, you know that it is the best decision you ever made and all will be fine, but alot of life is gonna change and that is scary.  I think clear liquids are only for the first 10 days.  All of the clear proteins that I have tried so far make me gag.  So not sure what I am going to do.  Maybe live on chicken broth and Gatoraide, and burn up some fat cells (LOL).  Let me know your date and as others have said ask lots of questions.  Everyone here is so nice and helpful.

I knew you guys would understand.  I have been on here for almost 2 years now and thought I knew everything until I realized that I didn't.  I went yesterday to look around at the Vitamin Shoppe and realized what I needed to do was go see Vitaladys website..which is what I am about to do!!  Funny thing...during the day I am excited...in the evening...I am scared to death!!

Surgery is Oct. 22nd.

Gotta go get my crazed child out of the bath!!  ;)
