New Study! Insufficient sleep undermines weight loss

My dh brought me an article from today's Annals of Internal Medicine***. This is huge! I tried to distill it down to a conclusion. In a nutshell:
***I got the publication wrong

A study was done to determine the effects of insufficient sleep on overweight people who were using dietary limiting measures to lose weight. They found that lack of sleep causes neuronal and hormonal changes that slows the loss of body fat (by 55%!) and increases the loss of fat-free body mass (lean body mass), when compared to dieting overweight adults who got sufficient sleep. In addition, lack of sleep caused an increase in hunger and changes in energy expenditure.

"In a broader context, our results shed new light on the paradoxical association of human obesity with the loss of the most energy-efficient and sedentary human behavior: sleep. Our data suggest that insufficient sleep may compromise the maintenance of fat-free body mass and promote retention of fat..."

The study was conducted by the University of Chicago Sleep Research Laboratory and was funded by the National Institutes of Health. They studied more than 250 inpatient days.

 Thanks for posting this.  I've really been trying to get better sleep.  I did best when I was exercising 3 hours a day all summer.

Good grief! 3 hours a day? That's awesome.  What changes did you see in your body?  Did it help with muscle tone and the jiggly bits?

I saw increased anxiety.  In August I went three weeks without dropping a single pound.  That's when they finally started treating me with Thyroid meds.

I don't know about the jiggly because I'm still so fat.  But my legs have gotten really strong and I hope they'll look ok.  The skin is really loose.  :(

My arms are my problem area but they've gone down about 5 inches since surgery.  When the fat is gone, opppps... I bet skin skin skin.

Now what I've really seen is that my pace has gone from 3 miles an hour to 3.5 during the warmup and them to 3.8 to 4.2 walking pace on the treadmill.  I know that where the real changes are, is in my heart and lungs.

I'm now exercising 90 minutes a day M-F and try for 2+ hours on the weekend.

  I think its so true....i  just think of my consumption of coffee and gulp....chocolate  to keep slogging through interminable 14 hour days like a grinning fool..... and then do it all over again the next day .... it exhausts Ur adrenal glands ....

and doesnt that lead to a release of CORTISOL ..which is the culprit in tthe  dreaded BELLY  FAT?

so  now could  someone please tell these  pesky  Indian and Chinese  clients of mine to  stop calling at  4 Am ( the absolute end of THEIR  business day)   ....because theyre giving me belly fat lol ?!!

Oh yeah.  Another good reason for my 9-10 hr naps at night.  Sleep has never been an issue with me.  I can do it anytime and love it.

Aha!  This is one of those things I would have suspected to be true without the supporting evidence.  It makes a lot of sense.  

I've always been a good sleeper (what a gift!) though for the first several weeks after my RNY, I was sleeping quite fitfully and only for a couple of hours at a time.  I'm so glad that I've finally returned to my normal sleep patterns.  Otherwise, I'm not sure how I'd function.

The study underlines the point that we need to take a lack of sleep very seriously.

I can believe it. Add stress and lack of sleep, look out!  Ava, Vitalady says cinnamon is good for getting rid of belly fat. I dunno about that but I try to get cinnamon into my shakes every day.

I've been reading about weight gain after having a hysti and it's quite depressing. I'll try not to lose any sleep over it though. [sigh]

hahaha.  I'm only laughing at your pun.  The hysti weight gain factor is a bummer. I wonder if you were to find out what is happening in the body to cause it, you could do or take something to prevent it.

I think from swinging shifts for  over 10 years has me a little off kilter!
Thank goodness I finally got a straight shift.
