Labs Labs Labs!
I recently got my 3 month labs, and aside from my Vitamin D, my surgeon said everything looked fine. Not that I don't trust my surgeon, but I was wondering what all the vitamin gurus had to say. Any advise is much appreciated!
Sodium, Serum 139
Potassium, Serum 4.1
Creatine, Serum .68
Calcium, Serum 9.4
Albumin 4.2
Iron, Total 77
Total Iron Binding Capacity 262
%Transferrin Saturation 29
Vitamin B1 Plasma 12
Vitamin D 25, Total 30 (since receiving these results, I started taking vitalady's dry D3-5 5,000 a day)
Vitamin D 25, D3 30
Vitamin D 25, D2 <4
Prealbumin 19
Urea Nitrogen Blood 10
Hemoglobin 15.3
Hematocrit 43.9
Glucose, Plasma 82
Ferritin 148
Vitamin B12 771
PTH INtact and Calcium PTH 49
Calcium 9.5
My current vitamin schedule is as follows:
AM: One Centrum multivitamin (with iron), One D3 5,000 iu (recently added), One Biotin, 1000 iu, High potency B complex, and one sublingual vitamin B12 1,000 mcg every other day.
About two hours later, and throughout the afternoon, I start taking my calcium, one pill, each about 1-2 hours apart. This totals 4 Citracal Calcium Citrate w/ D3 (or two servings) each pill has 315 mg of Calcium Citrate and 250 iu of D3. Totaling 1260 Calcium and 1000iu Vitamin D a day.
Any advise on the timing of taking these? I always space out each pill, since I"m not sure if I can absorb the Calcium of two pills (or one serving) at once, but it would be easier if I could just take two pills at a time.
PM: One Centrum Multivitamin (with iron)
Thanks so much in advance!

I think your PTH and calcium will improve as you bring your D3 up. If it were me, I'd increase the dry D3 to a least 20,000IUs a day instead of 5,000 or 10,000IUs. Dry D will not make you toxic like oil-based D2 that docs prescribe. The other thing you might want to think about is stitching to a calcium citrate only capsule that Vitalady carries. There are no binders in the capsules, which helps with constipation. You can add magnesium citrate or magnesium oxide to assist with absorption. You can also take boron with each 600mg dose of calcium to help with absorption. It won't hurt to bring your total calcium up to 1,800 - 2,400mg a day just increase slowly and adjust any stool softeners and fiber as needed. You should be able to absorb 600mg of calcium citrate and give yourself a couple of hours in between doses. Mag oxide will help with constipation.
Keep an eye in ferritin and iron if all you're taking is what's in your multi. You may see a downward trend and it will be hell to try to bring it up. Catch it quick if you see that at your next labs.
You might want to take another B12 a day and bring your B12 up and over 1,000.
Make sure they put vitamin A on your next labs. Do you see protein on your labs. Your albumin looks good (in the 4s) but you want to see both albumin and protein on your labs. You want your protein at or near 7.
Rock on!

Thanks MajorMom!
I'll up my B12, calcium and D. I started taking iron earlier out, but my surgeon wanted me to wait until the next set of labs before I start to include it. So I'll re-visit the iron issue in December. If it's any lower than my current labs though, I think I'll start taking it no matter what. Thanks again!

Your PTH is too high and your vitamin D is way too low. You can fix both of these by increasing both your calcium and vitamin D. Taking 5,000 units of D per day isnt' nearly enough. You can either take 15,000 units per day or 50,000 units 2 times per week. Vitalady sells the same D3-50 which are 50,000 unit capsules instead of 5,000 units. As far as the calcium goes, you need to take between 1500-1800mg per day in 3 daily doses - 2 doses per day, just isnt' enough and your labs are showing it. So, continue to take the same calcium you are taking and take 2 at a time, 3 times per day. You dont' have to take them 1 pill at a time - you can absorb up to 650mg at a time but you do need atleast 2 hours between each of the 3 doses. Being your centrum has iron in it, you cant take it with your calcium. The iron in the multi is the wrong type of iron and you won't absorb it, so you still need a separate iron supplement with carbonyl iron plus vitamin C which you can get at vitalady.com - it is called tender irons - they are 60mg capsules and they have the C already in them.
You are at the very bottom of the range for vitamin B1 - you might want to get a separate vitamin B1 supplement and take 100mg daily.
Your B12 is also too low, I would increase your sublinguals to daily.

Thanks, I didn't realize the iron in the multi-vitamin was the wrong kind! I'll go to the centrum w/out the iron, and go back to taking the iron I started taking before (which was the tender iron w/ vitamin C). I'm glad to hear I can take two calciums at a time...but bummed I should be taking 6 a day instead of 4. But at least I don't have to space out 6 a day..I'd never be able to take them all!
At least if I do a multi-vite w/out iron, I can start taking my calcium in the morning. I'll push the iron to the evening.
