Having food cravings

First the good news:  after I made a promise to myself to turn things around and eat right (more protein and fewer calories); take my vitamins, drink more water, etc. and get off the computer, I have had 2 days of success on all counts.  When I saw my Nut, I realized I had been taking in far more calories than I should (healthy food calories.... just too many).  So I feel pretty good about my new resolve.

Now for the bad news:  Now that I'm being more strict with myself and am following all the rules, I'm getting terrible food cravings and am hungry a lot of the time!  I feel like this is what they describe as the Honeymoon being over. Drat! If every day is going to be a struggle like this from now on, I'm gonna be in trouble. There is nothing stopping me from over-eating. I have a pretty big pouch and I don't dump. It feels like the old days when I had to rely on willpower alone.  I'm worried that this surgery might not work for me.

Well, the only thing I've heard that works, physically, is protein shakes. 4 - 6 a day with tiny meal/snacks only. No big meals. I don't know if the shakes will cut your cravings, mentally, but they're supposed to actually work to reduce cravings. Good luck!

OK-- I'll give it a try.  I don't mind the taste of Unjury chocolate, so at least there is one type that I can drink.

I know where you're at!  I find it takes 3 days to "decarb" myself when that happens to me.  It seems we also go back to our "old" ways and start obsessing about food, even if we don't feel physically hungry.

Give yourself some time and focus on the successes - oh, and get those protein shakes in!

Are you exercising?  I joined a gym last week and have found it helps a lot - mainly because I'm now staying busier and not coming home and parking my behind on the couch right after work.  Then I feel good about the exercise and don't want to negate what I just did with bad food...

Yeah, I think the exercise is key for that.  My inner efficiency boss doesn't like to allow me to waste time or energy.  So if I've exercised and then crave food to undo it, the boss says "no!" And so far I've listened.

Might that work for you, Kathy?

for me - its strictly fat free almost sugar free at home ( because it allows for a lot more VOLUME eating ) - air popped popcorn as the "free " snack ...lots of exercise for the all important substitute serotonin release

And OA OA OA !!!! ( that would be Oveeaters Anonymous meetings to deal with food addiction issues ) - ie why we emotionally eat , why we eat when were not hungry , why we graze .....

with gastric bypass OA REALLY works well...try it . There are online meetings even....

also DRINKING wight glasses of water a day is HUGE - we mistake thirst for hunger most of us ....

and U can learn a tremendous amount journaling Ur food and exercise hereron the liteweights board at menus n miles - i know i did
.and continue to do !

Hey Ava,

You have been very successful so i don't want to question you, but do you ever worry that the higher volume eating etc., will stretch your pouch?

Hell what do I know I don't even have a pouch, just curious.

well i have a big pouch to begin with ( i stoopidly ASKED for one believe it or not because ive eaten this way forever ) ......

so i can eat the same volume as a normal person ...now before surgery i could have been a competitive eater volume wise EASILY ....

do i worry significantly about it ? not really . I noticed if i eat less ....it still seems to stop me at a lesser point . My REAL problem is grazing ...and eating a second meal out of boredom an hour later which no tiny pouch will help.

i eat a lot of things with very few calories . I notice as long as i stick to a lot of freshies - i e salads , veggies in sauce - im FINE . If i eat CAKE ( even fat free sugar free fruit filled homemade cake , lowfat gelato, beans , meat and bread i GAIN ) . Again , this is really not SURPRISING .

My pouch was made bigger because i told the doc i liked to eat homegrown SALADS and veggies - if i turn around and abuse it to eat all U can eat buffets ..hello - I will regain .

if i had a chance to do over ... yep id INSIST on a DS ...LOL. Because I still LIKE the buffets and healthy desserts honestly .... and dont feel i should have to go through life without the enjoyment of food ..or constantly worrying about regain either .

Grazing is definitely something we all have to watch for and I'm a big fan of fresh whole foods as well!

Thanks for your reply!

Kathy,

I agree with Jody, even a couple of days of low, low carbing helps to get rid of the craving for me and the carbs don't sit well after you are off them (for me anyway).  If you are able to, maybe try 2-3 ounce of dense meat at the beginning of your meal.  That always reminds me of how small my stomach actually is.

Good luck!
