Could really use some swinging lizards

This weekend I've spent in the hospital and I'm afraid I'm not getting better

Everything was great I was doing great walking sipping sucking my IV.

We decided to stay one last night at the hospital since we were driving and my husband insisted.  I still think that might have been my falling grace.

Wednesday evening I told my nurse my IV was bothering my hand she said it was normal and just let it be.  Well Thursday morning I woke up with a hand literally 4x its normal size.  I couldn't make a fist or anything.  My nurse said sorry and discharged me.  I hadn't thought about it then...but I lost 9 hours of fluid.

Thursday drive was great I was sipping as much as possible and we stopped every 45 minutes to walk.  Got home was tired but hey we just spent 13 hours driving a 7 hour drive.

Friday morning woke up feeling pretty gross but figured it was because of the long day and hey I just had HUGE surgery.  Well I spent the day resting getting up as needed around mid afternoon I felt horrible chills couldn't eat gagged on everything.  Literally didn't have the saliva to swallow.  My husband took my temperature.  104.1

Took an ambulance to the er....ambulance couldn't get my IV in...I was in and out of consciousness.  I was trying to tell the nurse I need an IV I need an IV.  My husband was delayed almost 2 hours because the hospital was giving him the run around.  Finally when He got in the room he demanded an IV for me.  They couldn't get it in because my veins were so flat.  I got a chest xray, and a CT scan.  They came back that I had pneumonia, and a confirmed UTI and possible Kidney Infection due to my white count being and I quote "incredibly high"

I was put on a 24 hour IV drip of Levoquin and a 24 hour drip of another antibiotic I can't remember.

Here's the fun part they put me in a room and this doctor comes in...and he looked stoned as hell...didn't know what my surgery was.  Didn't understand why I was freaking out when he tried to put me on ibuprofen to reduce my fever.  I'm in and out of fever sleep here because my fever is still 103 and I was shouting at him that I will not take any medicines not approved by a bariatric surgeon.  He needs to contact his bariatric surgeon.  He got really offended and brought in his chief whatever and that person tried to tell me don't worry itll be ok well take good care of you.  To which I replied "do you know anything about my surgery NO it took me over a year to research bariatric surgery I can't teach you in 5 minutes and you obviously don't give **** and I don't feel like dying today."  He then told me (get this) well its 4:00 am now the surgeons may get in their office around 7:00 am.  around now I passed out because my fever was 104 again.

I woke up on and off in a fever daze.  I remember praying hard for my son and my husband and making my peace with god.  Around 10:00am a member from their bariatric team came in and told me to take tylenol.  I did my fever broke later that afternoon.  I then began to have intense diarrhea due to the antibiotics and they (by now according to my husband I had close to 7 IV bags)

I began to feel better and was discharged on sunday.  Their surgeon did an upper GI on me and I passed. My diarrhea continued really bad (yes they still discharged me with it  I don't understand why.  They just switched me to liquid cipro and said see ya

Sunday night I was feeling really woozy went to the er got an IV bag felt better

today I have been ok for the most part I have gotten in just under 32 ounces of fluid but still have had some diarrhea.  Ive been eating organic yogurt with live cultures to help the situation it lessened it drastically but its still there.

I'm really scared about keeping hydrated I'm doing everything in my power.  I really don't want this surgery cause me to be in the ER every other day.  We are alone in MN and well my husband has had to bring our son with him and Sunday my son broke in to tears and told me he's sorry he put me in the ER and he doesn't want me to die because he hugged me hard earlier in the day I broke down I couldn't believe I gave my four year old that much guilt.  Any advice on how to battle this diarrhea I would greatly appreciate.

thanks

Swinging lizards like mad for you! Dang, I'm sorry you're going through this. Keep sipping 'til you feel like you could float a boat. The yogurt is a great idea and you might try a probiotic such as Primal Defense Ultra. The antibiotics, while killing the bugs, is leaving your healing guts with no good bugs. Plus, many folks have diarrhea the first few days just because their guts are healing...not sure why. Keep after the fluids. If you need to go back to the ER for fluids, do it. This will pass but you have to stay after the fluids.

Honey, I am so sorry!  And I am absolutely disgusted by the incompetence.

My hospital puts out a card that I wrap around my insurance card. It has all sorts of information for the medical team to know in case I'm rushed to a hospital that's unfamiliar with my surgery or if I'm incapacitated and unable to provide it.  Does your surgeon have such a card?  If not, you can insist that s/he creates one.  (When I think of it, I'll scan mine so that others can see it...)

The hydration issue should clear up, and I pray that you're through with that moment.  You will get better!

In my first few days, I had a lot of PowerAde and VitaminWater Zero. I  didn't get to water until later.  That helped with hydration, though I never quite faced what you did.

Is your surgical team staying in close touch with you?  They should be monitoring you, particularly since dehydration isn't exactly uncommon with WLS.  They aught to know how to help you with this.

You need a  stool culture to rule out clostridium difficile asap!
If positive you will be started on flagyll or vancomycin by mouth. This can be very serious, so I wouldnt stall. Call your internist today.
Yogurt is a great source of probiotics, but you can not eat enough, so I would recommend natrens healthy trinity, they have a online site or may be available to you at your local health food store. This really helped me through the c.diff I had that caused psuedomembranous colitis and diarrhea for 3 months!
So sorry about the rough times you are having, but hopefully you will be feeling better soon!
Keep on sipping!
Prayers for a quick recovery!

I'm so sorry to read about your experience.  You must have been so freaked out.  I know I would have been.  Thankfully your husband was with you to be your advocate while you were so out of it.  Please keep in touch and keep giving us updates on how you're doing.

Get in the fluids however you can.  I loved Vitamin Water 0 calories - Fugi Apple Pear the first weeks post-op.  It tastes like watered down apple juice and goes down easy.  Also, don't forget about no sugar added popsicles.  When melted they are 2 oz each.  I kept a glass by the sink and threw my sticks in there so that I could add up the ounces at the end of the day.  The cold can feel really good to our swollen insides.
