French Quarter and All That Jazz!

I had a little mini-meltdown last week about my upcoming 60th birthday on October 6th.  I called my son Zach and told him I wanted to come to NY for the weekend to celebrate which he thought was great.  My friends are taking me out on my actual birthday but I wanted weekend plans too.

But I kept thinking on it.  Thinking that I wanted something really memorable.  An old beau took me to Paris for a week to celebrate my 50th.  Kinda hard to top that, particularly in a weekend.  The two weeks in Provence and the French Riviera this summer were part of my big celebratory year, but I still wanted more more more fun.

So I decided on 4 days in New Orleans, where I've never been before.  It sounds like a great walking city.  Zach was there twice in the last year to shoot films and he fell in love with it.  I'm excited to experience something new.

I've booked us into the Omni Hotel in the French Quarter.  It's should be in the 80's so I liked the Omni because of the rooftop pool and fitness center.  We already have a plan to meet in the airport and go straight to the hotel to swim and workout.

So here's my question.  If you've been to NO, what are the  must see places or things to do?  I'll only have Friday, Saturday and Sunday daytime, so I want to pack them with lots of walking and seeing everything.  I'm already planning a Riverboat ride and spending evenings in the jazz clubs.  I'm going to check out Tripadvisor which never lets me down as far as things to do.

I think that would be a great trip! I've been there a couple of time on business (pre-Katrina), but no sight seeing. Lake Pontchartrain was beautiful. Our workshop overlooked the lake and you could see the fish jumping and watch folks jet skiing. I guess we were near a university that's close to the lake. The only other place I've been was Bourbon Street. It's ok if you like watching drunk people. lol

HI Gina, definitely don't like drunk people.  Neither my son or I really drink.  That's why I didn't want to stay on Bourbon Street because I read that the hotels were filled with drunk people running up and down the halls.  I picked a high end hotel figuring that would deter drunk people.  :)

I haven't been to NO (planned to go twice but both trips were cancelled due to weather, oddly enough) but it sounds like so much fun!

I'm really happy that you're living it up for this celebration.  Don't forget that 60's the new 40 or something.  Maybe even the new 35, since you're hitting 60 as such a foxy lady!

Sounds like a wonderful vacation!  For my 50th, my daughter and I went to Ft Lauderdale - we had a great time.

And here... I thought you were going to ask who wanted to go with you - lol.

It sounds like your son is a gem - you're very lucky you have him - even on the opposite coast and can spend good quality time with him still.

Jody, I would have loved to go with you!  We really should think about a LW get together one of these months.  It would be so fun to spend a weekend walking around a fun city getting to know each other.  I count on all of you so much for support.

I never forget to be grateful for my relationship with my son.

My 60th is coming up in a few months and I like your observation about it being the "new 40."

I have been to NO twice, both pre-Katrina (the hurricane, not me...gets confusing).

Staying in the French Quarter is THE way to go (we stayed there both times 1 block off Bourbon, which was perfect).  You must go to Preservation Hall (famous jazz venue)... we had to stand outside but still worth it.  You should take one of the cemetery tours (so fascinating) and just absorb the Quarter.  The French market is fun (or was) to walk thru and look at "treasures."

Take a trolley to the Garden District but be careful where you walk there.... some areas are high crime just a street or 2 over from really elegant areas so jus****ch your surroundings.

Be sure to go to Cafe du Monde just for atmosphere (hope the beignets don't call too loudly to you).

You are far more well traveled than I so you will figure it out but it is a GREAT place to visit... though still pretty hot this time of year.    Send me a message if you want more info.

 Hi Kat,

Thanks for these great suggestions! We're staying a few blocks from Cafe du Monde so I'm sure we'll get over there.  I'd like to see the Garden District and the French market.

How wonderful to plan your trip around exercise! I went to New Orleans on my honeymoon, but it was all about the food. You will have a great time, because you have a spirit of adventure and obviously like to travel.

So glad you have so many things going for your birthday! You are good to so many people, let them be good to you.

Congrats for your success on the journey to health and cute clothes.
