You are not THAT fat comments.

I too, only told the need to know group, being my hubby, kids and the nurse at work.  I totally agree with Gina when she says people are really only trying to be nice when they say you're not big enough for that.  I can tell you that my bmi was just under 40, but I have lost 100 lbs and was big enough!  Just because it's either well distributed or people are trying to flatter you, don't let it get to you.

I get a lot of comments at work (I work in an office with 150+ people and know them all) all the time, but no one has ever asked if I had wls.  The often ask how I did it and I simply reply lifestyle changes.  If they want an elaboration I say low carb, less food and more exercise, which is the truth.

Don't despair, it's well worth it!

I too told someone prior to surgery, instead of getting the "you're not heavy enough" I got the "well, I can get that weight off you without surgery with my XYZ diet"... I was mortified.  She then said "I've lost 50 lbs on it" and I said "yes, how about keeping it off?" and she said "well, I don't know about that"....

So - I vowed NOT to tell anyone outside my immediate circle that needed to know, in fact, I didn't tell my mom until 2 days before, because she's a negative Nellie.  I didn't say anything to anyone after that either.  When I was asked by people, I'd say I'm following a low carb, high protein diet and exercising, which was true.  By the time it leaked out about my surgery I had already lost enough weight that they can't "argue with success".  When you do it the right way, take your vitamins, etc and are very healthy... well - that speaks for itself.

You'll get a few more comments from non-educated people.  Like Gina said - let it roll off your back and don't take it personally.  They just don't know any better.

I have been sooo tempted, but have not (because I am a southern girl and we are so ingrained to be polite), when someone says ... and they have.... "You don't look THAT bad," or "You are not THAT fat,"  .... I want to say "Is that what you consider a compliment?  Well, it's not. "   Would you like to hear "Your nose isn't THAT big?"

Oh, I have a lot of fun with imaginary conversations!!

 Raykie2003... HELLO!!!!
I posted something just like this on another forum a couple days ago, I have been Approved, and went for my (X-rays, Ultrasound, EKG, c02 room air test, and LABS) on Tuesday of this week, and I left feeling guilty ONCE AGAIN, for being given this OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME, Because 1st when I get there to do the labs, the Phlebotomist said " I JUST KNOW YOU ARE NOT GETTING WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY"  as she said she had been trying to get it for a couple years and she was about 300+lbs, I shrugged it off, and said, "if I was not a candidate, my INSURANCE would have NEVER approved me... then, when I go for my X-rays, this pretty lil blonde about 110 lbs, says you dont need WLS, you can just lose the little extra weight, and i wanted to strangle her little neck, even though she meant well, but you could tell, she was never overweight before, and would not understand, so i just smiled and thanked her for the compliment... then the last test for the day, the EKG, a tall nice lady weighed me, and was like, i never would have thought you were the close to 200 lbs, and she then said, but I still dont think  the will approve you, as you ARE NOT THAT BIG??  I was like... HELLO... I have already been approved, but thank you very much!! So, yes, i have been getting those SAME remarks. We are getting the same surgery, but I dont have a SURGERY DATE, as I am a fill in, so it could be any day this month, or next month, as I will NOT need to have been on a liquid diet before surgery, I just can not eat after midnight the day before surgery.  SO GOOD LUCK AND MANY BLESSINGS TO YOU ON THIS JOURNEY!!

Personally, I would file a complaint against them. They are not supposed to be talking to you like that.

It's funny, though, that the only people who gave me a hard time were medical professionals, who should know better.

I heard that a lot too - and I was definitely morbidly obese! I just smiled and said that it was about the metabolic issues - not about the weight. People looked confused, but accepted it.

And you know what - it really WAS about the metabolic issues, and now that they've resolved, my life is so much better that I can exercise and tone! (actually, my nut and PT have told me to lay off the strength training - my muscles are FINE and will start to bulk and get too tight pretty quick!)

"Isn't wls for people like 300+ pounds or something?"

When people say that, I educate them. I explain that the surgery is much safer these days so it makes sense to do it earlier when you have a better shot at getting to a normal BMI and have done less damage to your health.

Thank you all soooo much for the encouragement!!
I feel so much better.

P.S. Rachel, I am so sorry those medical professionals were just ignorant to say things like that to you! I just cannot believe the things that people say..but as you guys have said, I am working on letting comments like this roll off my back!

Thanks, again!
:-)

ahhh .. yeah .... i was an EXTREME lightweight and being a tall ex athlete my body honestly didnt look that bad pre surgery .....

a lot of the nurses and people doing the pre op testing looked in much worse shape than me .... so rather than elicit their opinions and possibly stopping my surgery ..i just told them i was getting a hiatal hernia operation ... the pre op tests are exactly the same ... and people feel much less inclined to judge ....
