Pre_Op Hunger
Ok I am less than 90 days from my VSG surgery and I feel hungery all of the time and I mean all of the time. Is this some kind of psycological madness? Has this happened to anyone else? If I am not careful I am going to gain 20 more pounds that I just have to lose. I know that I am having this surgery for these specific issues and was just wondering if this had happened to anyone else preop.
Thanks :-)

Are you on any specific diet? There are lots of "free" foods that different programs list. When we were on Optifast for the last month, we could have celery and cucumbers as free food. If you look, there are lots of veggie low cal options that would be ok to eat inbetween meals. Try eating 5-6 small meals a day, which will be similar to what you will do after the surgery. Protein, veggies, next to no carbs should work.

No preop diet required by my surgeon. I am right at a 35 BMI but have several co-mobid issues that I wish to solve before I am any older. I will try the veggies and smaller more frequent meals. I have been trying to get in all of my fluids, which is hard for me in general. Thanks for the input.

I ate whatever I wanted pre-op, "last meal syndrome" LOL, but didn't gain any weight. When I did get very hungry was when I started 3 wk pre-op liver shrink diet. My surgeon was not real strict, sort of a Atkins type diet...but I ended up cheating at times at night meal because I would get so hungry. Surgeon said my liver looked great and couldn't tell I had cheated some. Don't know what to advise...do the best you can, but I wouldn't worry too much about it pre-op....or at least I didn't. Good luck.
I've been having my "food funeral" for the last 2 weeks, since I go on the liquid diet Monday morning prior to my surgery on Thursday. I have eaten some pretty BAD foods (potato chips, ice cream) but oddly enough, not in huge quantities. I have gone up and down by about a pound but basically back to baseline once again.
I dread next week but am DETERMINED to do it right.

Actually, I DO believe there is a psychological meaning to this. When I know I need to get back on track to lose a few lbs (and even before surgery), it would be like my mind would start stressing because now I can't eat. I'd feel extreme hunger at those times, but not when I wasn't on a diet....
the surgery will correct those problems - at least initially. Yesterday I was getting those "I'm hungry pains" whereas last week I wasn't having the issue (because I was at my daughters', not in my own environment). And - if I don't take my prevacid my pouch gets irritation and it feels like hunger - but its not, but eating (as my mind thinks I'm hungry) makes it feel ok for awhile - then its back with a veangance! I'm glad I can identify what that is now.

Jody- wow you are an inspiration. Two years from now I hope and pray that I can be as successful with this as you have been. Nice to know that surgery does correct some of these issues. I feel that if I could get a handle on it myself I certainly wouldn't be having surgery. But was a bit freaked out by my appetite the past couple of days. Thanks for the support and encouragement. I have posted a couple of times and have alway gotten great support.

I had a 4 week Optifast diet before surgery. I never was hungry, just bored. Since surgery, I haven't been hungry and have had to work hard to get everything in. Surgery really does take care of a lot of stuff.
