How do you handle the "getting too thin" comments?

Ok...first here are my stats:

Im 5'  8"

I started off at 278 lbs - BMI 42.3
Im now           169 lbs  - BMI 25.7

My normal BMI range is 18.5 - 24.9  - So Im 5 lbs from being within the "normal" BMI range.

Im getting all kinds of "You're getting too thin" ,  "Be careful, you dont want to look anorexic" comments.   I keep telling myself that people arent used to the thinner me.  They have known the obese Cindy for all those years.  I just tell them that Im close to my normal BMI goal weight, then I will start the maintaining phase.  My surgeon never gave me a goal weight.  He said my body would stop at a certain point.  The comments are driving me crazy!!!   How did everyone else handle this?   Cindy

I tell them I'm done losing then do what I want.  It keeps them quiet for a little while at least!

Me too...I just tell them "Nope, I don't plan on loosing anymore" and then continue as I am.  I sense it is a threat to some, as it was for me too when I was really fat and seeing someone else suceed made me feel worse about not doing well myself.  So I understand where some are coming from, but all the same, I'm not going to let it stop me from achieving my goal.  They will have to deal with their own stuff, just as I do, fat or thin.

Tell them you're being monitored by healthcare professionals and are doing just great!

I just told them "yep - I'm done"... then kept on doing what I was doing.

I still get "are you still losing weight?"... Umm - NO - I've been the same for about a year, bouncing a few lbs here and there - I've actually gained a few lbs.. but I guess they don't see that.  I just give them a baffled look and say "NO - but I'd like to".. haha - I'm one for punch and reaction.

Don't stop losing for anyone but yourself!!!  Once you stop losing and are maintaining the comments will stop from most people.

You are right about them not being used to the new you, but I also think we go through stage of looking pale because we have lost so much so fast.  I never noticed because I felt so good but my DD's tell me now that there was a time frame that they were worried about me. When I look back at my pictures, I can see what they were talking about.  My eyes didn't sparkle and I looked pale.

I also think if you wear clothes that fit you really good then you don't look so thin.

I just smile and say thank you.  If they push, I inform them that I am being monitored by my physician and am well within healthy weight and body size.  That usually stops them.

I get a little angered sometimes.  I wonder if they don't think I deserve to be thin.  But, then I try to rationalize that they just aren't used to me being thin & are truly concerned.

Congrats on your weight loss!.  I am very similar to you.  I weight 260 after just gaining 16 pounds to qualify for surgery.  I told my husband I want to be 145 and he said no way.  I say thinner is better because as we get older we tend to gain naturally.  If someone made a comment I would do as another person said and say that you hadn't noticed and that you still fit the same clothes.  People are so nosey.  Continue doing your thing:)
