What is the NORMAL hospital Stay for DS, RNY, VSG, or LAP-BAND?
Hello again... I am still debating about which surgery I will have. (I have already been APPROVED FOR WLS). I am just curious to know what is the USUAL hospital stay for each WLS. My surgeon says he releases his patients the same day, usually after 4 hours, if there are NO complications. But I have seen on here and other forums where some people stayed overnight, or up to 2-3 days without any complications... Please tell me what type of surgery you had, and how long was your hospital stay.
I HAVE TO ADVISE MY SURGEON WHICH SURGERY I CHOOSE BY TUESDAY SEPT. 14TH.

DS here. I stayed over night and was released within 24 hours of my surgery. I think they usually keep DSrs 2 nights but I was doing pretty well, so they cut me loose after I asked every single person that visited that morning if I could get the heck out of there. lol

Hi Rachel,
I had RNY on 8/16. I was planning on staying 1 night, but stayed 2 after some minor complications due to some medicine I had been taking BEFORE surgery - not actually related to the surgery, more to withdrawing from the medicine.
Wow! Hard to believe you would be released after 4 hours, but I'm sure you're surgeon is doing what he feels is best for you.
Have you compared the requirements AFTER surgery for each type of procedure? I think that's how I'd make my decision. Which plan might you feel most comfortable with...
Good luck making your decision and let us know!

RNY 12/16/09 ~ I stayed 2 nights in the hospital. 1st night was rough with back pain from gas used for lap procedure...and ng tube. Also I was diabetic and I think they just kept me for extra measures to watch sugar levels, labs, etc.
I have heard that my surgeon does lapband outpatient...RNY and other procedures with 1 night stay.
I also just had recent surgery (gynecological) that was supposed to be same day (under 24 hours) but ended up staying another night because I was not ready to go home yet (pain med issues)
Definitely talk to the surgeon and do what is comfortable for YOU!!! YOU are the patient and you know your body and what it needs...

Rachel, it really depends on you. NOT the surgeon. Even doing lap surgery, it's still invasive surgery and there are some things they have to check and some things you have to do before going home. Like a leak test to make sure nothing leaks, and you need to make sure your body is cooperating with you by at least passing gas or peeing. If you end up running any kind of fever, you won't be released. They also want to be sure you can get your fluids in.
So it's up to you not your surgeon.

My DECISION will NOT be made on how long the hospital stay is... I was just curious to know. I have already made up my mind, I just have NOT advised my surgeon yet. Thanks for the responses, please keep them coming.

I had RNY and stayed 2 nights, only because my potassium took a dump and they wanted to watch it. I could have left after 1... but I didn't have a lot to say about it.
So - which surgery have you decided to go with?
