Good Morning. Never Ever Forget.

What were you doing the morning of Set 11th, 2001?

I was in Arlington, VA briefing my General. Her XO came in twice and whispered something in her ear. The 2nd time she jumped up told us what was happening and rushed off to the emergency operations center. The rest of the day was chaotic to say the least. My office was tasked with getting a headcount of all our folks that were attached or assigned to the Pentagon. I lost some friends and acquaintances that day and the years following in Iraq, and I will never ever forget to remember them and what happened on this day in 2001.

Wow.  I got chillls reading your story.  We were about to leave for home after a wonderful vacation in Florida visiting friends in their condo.  We had slept later than we meant to when we got a call from the friend's daughter telling us to turn on the TV at once.  We proceeded to see the 2nd tower fall in real time.  For the next 6 hours we never moved from in front of the TV, all of us crying quietly and praying.  When we did leave for home, the drive back was surreal...no planes flying and the land was just silent.   We constantly monitored the radio and I just couldn't wait to hold each of our children, who were all young adults but still my babies.

May we never forget that terrible day.

Blessings,

The land being quite...I remember that as well. Our house is directly under the flight path for Dulles airport. No planes for at least a week.

We flew out to TX for Son#1's Air Force graduation a week or 2 after 9/11 and I think there may have been 25 people on the plane.

I remember watching it on TV before work and those our images that I will never forget. My niece worked in the Pentagon building at that time and my sister tried desperately to reach her to make sure she was alright.

Thank you Gina and all of our LW's who have served and have love ones who have served. You and your families are amazing people to have sacrificed so much for our country!!!

I also remember what Pride I fel****ching all of the American Flags flying in yards, on houses, and in front of businesses.   What happened to all of those Flags?  We still fly our Flag and it makes me smile every time I look at it.  I think it's one of the most beautiful sites in the world.

The day after we got home I rushed all over town buying flags.  The only place left that had any was a novelty store where I bought several to put in our cars.  I also put out the flag we fly every holiday and left it out for months.  We had church services and prayer vigils all over our town for weeks every night.  It's good to remember all that.

I was at work.  When the first one hit one of the training techs came and told everyone - we all rushed into a room that had a TV and stood and watched for hours what was going on.  It was pure horror.  Unbelieveable.

I told my daughter yesterday today was Patriot Day and she needs to fly her flag.  She said she doesn't have one, but does have a holder for one on the house.  I just told her dad (my first ex) he needs to go to the store and buy one for her.  I got a grunt.. geesh - you'd think we were still married...  that one's been over for 20 years...

Being a Police officer she needs to be flying one anyway.

As soon as I saw ( disbelievingly ) the  first  building collapse on TV   I realized public transportation ( especially the subway system and PATH systems in which most lines ran directly under the WTC )  would be knocked out and people trying to get home would need help , particularly the old and the disabled .

I mobilized the people I knew into helping ..... interestingly most GUYS ( ex vets , even ex cops ) were reluctant at first to get involved...but i guilted them into it .  So we all took our ( nice ) personal cars and sat by the Brooklyn bridge and waited for the  poor survivors covered with ash to stagger across ....and  gave the worst off ones rides home .  We gave dozens of rides ....well into the night ...

eventually we met up at the highest point in Brooklyn ( in Greenwood cemetery) and jus****ched the fires burn.... they kept burning for WEEKS literally .   The stench was amazing too .

The next day I  took the ( very sporadic)  transportation over to Manhattan and shot some pics of the site ....

I didnt know anybody who died there ...but many people who claim to have nearly missed it ... The many impromptu fliers on cars and poles requesting information on family members were so touching too ...

It was the first day of preschool for my oldest. I was in a puddle of tears already because his brother was in kindergarten and now the youngest was in school too. Where did the time go?
Came home and turned the television on just in time to see the second plane hit the tower.
I remember being froze and more tears for all of our countrymen caught up in that horror!
This is a day I will never forget.
God bless all those and their families that lost their lives and all those that helped with the massive clean up.
Maria
