Good Morning. DOs and DON'Ts

So is Iron the only thing we have to take separately from other things and everything else can be taken together?  And do you know how far apart or how long we need to keep these things away from an iron dose?  Just getting ready for my DS next month and have been taking iron to get my levels up and just realized I have been doing that all wrong and it is ONE pill!  Still confused on the vitamins for sure....thanks for this list!

Iron is whimpy so you have to take it in semi-isolation (But taking it with Vitamin C will help it be absorbed)

Calcium is a bully and not only beats up on iron, but can beat up on other things (though I can't find a definitive list of what not to take it with). This is why I don't take it with my multi-vitamin.

I take my calcium with things that it can't be competing with (like fish oil) and my multivitamin separately (it's my only iron source right now).

Great explanation...thanks! How much time between the calcium and iron is a good cushion?

Minimum of an hour. 2 is better.

DO realize that what works for you is not the one true path and that not all fat people are the same

DO realize that people are at different stages and what is appropriate at one stage is not at another

Those two kind of go together. I'm thinking of newbies scolding people 6 years out for having dessert or people having a fit if you don't follow every rule of THEIR program, which leads to:

DO realize that your surgeon, PA, PCP, NUT, shrink, program, etc. is not God and may not always have the right answer. Always do your own research (whi*****ludes, but is not limited to, getting their opinion) and come to your own conclusions. Then, if they are wrong, educate them so they can help the next patient

DO be an active participant in your own health care. Your health care team is an expert on medical matters but YOU are the expert in YOU. Ultimately, it's all your decision, not theirs

DO any head work you may require. Become self-aware so your food and weight-related self-delusions are less powerful and less likely to throw yourself off track.

Most of my DON'Ts turned out better expressed as DOs. I would conclude that these are the only rules that matter:

-DON'T eat real food until your staple line heals
-DO eat healthy including getting enough fluid and protein and limiting carbs as much as you can (the amount is different for everyone)
-DO wait an adequate time after eating to resume drinking
-DO take your supplements and get regular lab work (how often and what to check is going to depend on surgery type, prior lab results, etc.)
-DO move your ass! It doesn't have to be traditional "working out" but do something to move every day

Everything else.... straws, gum, don't eat this food or that, how often to eat and when, how often to exercise and when, and any other rules your program may have given you are mostly just their opinion on how to lose and maintain safely. If they work for you or make sense to you, fine, but if they don't, then don't be a slave to them.
