Good Morning. DOs and DON'Ts

What are some of the DOs and DON'Ts you've learned since your WLS?

DOs
do drink your protein

do follow Vitalady's vitamin plan and take dry forms of A, D, E and K

do have your labs checked every 6 months or yearly after an optimum lab report

do weigh at least 3 times a week

do track your labs on a spreadsheet and share it with your docs

do get active and move, even if it's only walking or doing stairs

do get a dexa scan done to keep an eye on your bone density

do pay it forward when the opportunity presents itself

DON'Ts
don't eat white flour or sugar

don't eat stuff with lots of sugar alcohols

don't eat carby snacks, you'll just want more

don't believe everything your surgeon tells you about vitamins, they have no training in vites

don't believe everything your NUT tells you about dieting, they have no training in what works only what they're taught based on an erroneous US food pyramid

don't stay involved with people who are naysayers and drag you down

don't take your iron with calcium (dairy), whole grains, eggs or caffeine

Mornin Gina!!  Great question.

DOs
*of course ditto to all the protein/vitamin/lab stuff!

DO
*Keep your head in the game.  Just because I look like a normie does not mean I am.  The body that used food as a drug and as a "protector" still uses the same trix she always has to give her what she wants - I need to be the boss of my own mind now.  :}
*Find some sort of purposeful movement that you love!  I hike 2 to 4 miles 5 days a week (unless I am sick or out of town - because that's when the dogs and I go blow off their energy so they do not make me choke them because they are restless) but the purposeful movement I love is .....
*shoutout* I LOOVE ZUMBA!! ZUMBA IS THE ONLY EXERCISEY THING I HAVE FOUND THAT I DO NOT HAVE TO TALK MYSELF INTO GOING BACK TO DOING AFTER I HAVE BEEN ABSENT FOR A WHILE!
You know..like because I have been on vacation or broken my toe?  Its like a date with my girlfriends going dancing !  Whoot!
*Do remind yourself to be kind to yourself and others, especially when you are having the initial UMS (ugly mood swings) of quick weight loss and hormones swirling around in your body.

DONTs
*Do not let yourself wallow too long. Sometimes life happens, days/weeks/whatever are crappy and you feel slogged down with self pity - everyone deserves to be able to wallow for a minute - but when you realize you are wallowing - do not stay there too long.  Its a dark and moody path to not caring about *much of anything* and not taking care of yourself like you ought to!
*Do not forget - you are not a normie!  Not even if you look like one!
*Do not begrudge the things you need to do to keep yourself healthy.  The time you spend gifting yourself with good health is worth it.  YOU ARE WORTH YOUR OWN TIME!

Don't compare yourself to others during the active weight loss phase (hard, I know)

Do take your  measurements pre WLS and every month on your surgiversary

Do stay accountable to yourself.

Do admit to yourself when you are getting off plan and give yourself a mental slap to get back on track

Don't buy too many clothes on the way down...

Don't be surprised if you skp sizes

Do work hard to maintain your relationships - they will change post WLS.  (friends AND spouses/significant others)

Do realize you WILL lose some hair.

When you hit maintenance DO NOT think you can eat whatever you want... remember the rules.

mmm..... this is a REALLY good thread ...

Do -  drink enough water ( enough to drown a whale, choke a horse etc.... )

make sure ya get plenty of fiber ( or eat two figs before ya sleep  or both)

in my case  take vitamins that help level the blood sugar - ashwagaranda  and red yeast rice . They seem to ease the diabetic bodys EXTRA reluctance to lose  and get defined some what               too

get outside whenever possible - whether its to MOVE  , or to garden , or just soak up the sun on my (spf  protected though)   formerly flabby parts .......  it helps improve MOOD , weight , and skin tightness SO MUCH

         be grateful every day

Don't  - ever forget where U came from and where Ur body tends to go ( ie huge eating and huge sizes in my case )

let go of the controls when it comes to food  intake

             eat normally when u CAN

             taste foods

             live a food-centered life

kid Urself that U are normal  in any way

             ever stop exercising

Great tips everyone.  Thanks.

Do:
Believe you can do this.
Follow a plan of some type after you have done your research.
Take your vitamins & have your labs
Take the time for yourself & to keep up with your food if you need to especially at the beginning.  Be accountable for your actions
Stay in touch with the LW Boards
Drink your water
Find some type of exercise or something that you enjoy doing.

Don't:
Start something you know you can't handle (eating certain foods)
Drink with your meals - RNY
Depend totally on your WLS - you do have to do some work for this.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Awesome post!  I second all the posts above!!

Do Keep track of everything you eat even though you are on maintenance (those little bites and tastes are extra calories we forget about).

Do Keep posting on OH even after maintenance because no matter how far along we are we still need encouragement and there are Newbies who are counting on us!

Do take before pictures and body measurements (sometimes you can't see the progress in the mirror).

Do keep a journal or post on your OH home page about your journey because as the pounds disappear so does our memory. (It all happens so fast and it's so mind boggling).

Don't let your snacks and carbs get out of control even though the scale doesn't show it.  They will catch up with you!!!

Don't play games with sugar (sweets).  It's better to avoid it completely!!!

Don't just eat out of the peanut butter jar without measuring (I just did this ).

Don't believe others when they say you have lost enough and you are melting away!!!  Your Goal should be a normal BMI.   If you are getting all of your Protein in...you won't melt away!

OK, Gotta stop...LOL
