Do I weigh enough for surgery?

I'm 5'0", started at 208, BMI was 40.6 (which is MO). I"m at 200 now.  Once I do my 2 week pre-op diet, I expect to be in the 180s. Which leaves me with only about 60 pounds to lose (GW 125). This doesn't seem like a lot to lose.  The surgery was the doctor's suggestion, and I've already been approved. What do you guys think?

You are definitely a good candidate for surgery!  Don't be surprised when you fall below your goal weight of 125 though.  I was just an inch shorter than you and I started at 203 and I'm down to a normal BMI with a weight of 109.   If you have tried dieting the "normal" weigh and it isn't working or you can't keep it off than I would definitely consider it.  My biggest regret is waiting until I was older and if I had it to do over again I would have had it done years ago!

Only you can make this decision, but we are here for you if you need to talk, need encouragement, or if you just want to sound off!!

I bet you're a great candidate or your insurance would not approved you, nor would your doctor have recommended it.

Like Roz, I wish that I hadn't waited so many years to do it.  If you wait, you might lose the weight on your own, but then again you might gain it back with bonus pounds.  I was on a diet for 50 years.  Now I feel like I'm on a food plan with a chance at having the rest of my life without the obsession about my weight and health.

I'd say GO FOR IT!  :)

I read that the insurance goes by the weight you were when you started the program, not what your surgery weight will be.  Have you already been approved?  Got a date?  Then I wouldn't worry about it ;-)

I am 5 feet tall... my highest was 200, I first weighed in at he Doctors office at 193, and was denied, I gained a few pounds while on vacation and requested that I be re-weighed and an APPEAL was sent. I got my approval Friday Sept 3rd. I don't have to go on any PRE-OP diets per my surgeon, and I am currently back at my normal weight of 192. With OUR height, we are candidates for this surgery, or INSURANCE WOULD HAVE NEVER APPROVED.  They can not deny you right before surgery because you lost weight, so good luck, and see you on that losing bench, that they are keeping warm for us!!!!  CONGRATS AGAIN ON YOUR APPROVAL.

I think you would be a great candidate.  I lost a lot of weight over the years but always gained it back.  I'm hoping this tool will help me keep it off this time.

Good luck.

I started at 175 and my goal weight is 115, which is 60 pounds to lose.  My insurance wouldn't cover it (I didn't even bother asking), but I can tell you having this surgery (I have the sleeve) is the best decision I ever made.  It sure beats the past FORTY YEARS of yo-yo dieting!!!

I am 4' 11" and weigh 193.  My surgery is in 18 days!  I am having the VSG.   My goal weigh is 115.

At my very best, I weighed 108 at ages 25-32 with 1 of my 3 pregnancies during that period where I gained 40 pounds but lost it again.  Since age 32 and my 3rd pregnancy, I have not been below 165.

I'm like so many others, wishing I could have had this surgery at least 20 years ago but I plan to make the MOST of it now.

I am only required 12 hours of liquid preop but plan to try for 60 hours.  One of my OH friends who had the VSG by my surgeon did 72 hours and thinks it helped her break the carb habit.  She has had GREAT success.

Best wishes to you.
