Lose versus Loose --- NOT picking on anyone, I promise

I am a medical editor by profession so I read with an editor's eye.  I am NOT a grammar snob but I can't help noticing how often loose and lose get mixed up.... by at least 50% of people, I would estimate.

Now, you WILL find typos in my posts and you may find grammar errors... I'm not perfect.  And if you saw me in person (still working on posting a picture), you'd want to fix my hair or my makeup or straighten my clothes, most likely.... but..... I cribbed the information below from a site called Lesson Tutor by an Elaine Ernst Schneider and I think it explains things VERY well.  Kudos to Ms. Schneider....

LOSE means to lack the possession of, to come to be without.

LOOSE means not tight.

LOOSEN means to unfasten something or make it less constraining.

Examples:

The hockey team doesn't want to lose the game.

The girl had such a bad sunburn that she could only wear loose clothes.

Set the dog loose. Don't tie him up again.

I am so frustrated! I always seem to lose my keys.

Loosen your hold on the bat. You are gripping it much too tightly!

Anyway, I truly hope I didn't offend anyone and I want to make friends here but you know how some people can't resist straightening a crooked picture on a wall.... well, grammar is it for me.

Have a FABULOUS holiday weekend.

It bugs me too but I have also done it. It's not that I don't know the difference. It's that my fingers don't always type what my brain is thinking. Luckily, most of the time I catch it before I hit the submit button.

I have typos all the time, so I'll be trying your patience.  Like MAC, it's not that I don't know better, just fingers that misbehave, mostly on my laptop.  :)

MY problem is *I* know the difference but my fingers don't. And spell check sure as heck doesn't cause they are both spelled correctly just used incorrectly.

So unless I find something glaringly obvious, it might slip by me. And my major in college was English.

But I read typos very well. :) I have a friend who can't spell worth beans. I just ignore it.

Have you ever see this:
I cluod not blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid. Southern Lady, I have seen that and it is really interesting!

I certainly have typos, too, and I haven't seen a way to edit posts on here though some of you technical wizards probably know how...

One of the last big medical transcription companies I did editing for sent a lot of their work out to India (I think they all do now)... I was editing a report where it was supposed to say "the patient had AVMs in her colon (which is an acronym for arteriovenous malformations)."   The MT in India typed it out "avians in her colon," which means..... drumroll please.... she had birds up her butt.....

Another nurse kept dictating that a man had a "penile lesion in his brain" instead of a "pineal lesion in his brain."  Now we all know that many men have their brains in that location but not many have the opposite, I would think.

Hope you all have a fabulous holiday.

I know for some folks spelling and grammar mistakes are like fingernails on a blackboard. I create graphics with our proposal writer and I know she's that way. For me, I can read that paragraph Liz posted with no problem at all and I routinely skip words in my sentences because I can't type. I figure it's a left brain / right brain thing, and I'm guilty as hell, so I usually pay it no mind. lol

People making typos on here doesn't bother me because I know we are all busy people typing as fast as we can between chores, but typos in articles or web sites drive me crazy.  A few times I have actually wrote to the quilty party and told them about the misspelled words.

Don't let our typos drive you so crazy that you can't enjoy our LW Board......

What a nice way of posting this, Kat!  "Loose" v. "lose" is definitely akin to fingernails on a chalkboard for me, and not a day goes by without such an error on WLS boards.

Meanwhile, I'm sure that my vanity drives others crazy, too.  That's the thing I love about the LW board - we put up with each other so lovingly!
