Good Morning. Ever wonder about 10 years post-op?

Thanks for responding, Ruby. I've heard the stories about diabetics getting the wrong diet in assisted living situations and it's criminal!  I just hope that our WLSs will mean something to the medical community in the future and our docs will prescribe vitamins, extra protein and low carb diets. I guess we need to plan ahead and get that info in our medical records PDQ.

I have these thoughts a lot.  I used to deliver Meals on Wheels as a volunteer to a senior citizens tower and I have prayed not to end up there.  The people were so sweet but the building was SOOO depressing.  Also, my mom spent the last 8 months of her life in a nursing home (by her own request since living with me was not an option) so I feel a sense of dread that could happen to me.... in fact, her dying was what propelled me forward to get on this WLS journey.

On a happier note, I read in the LA Times on line today that metformin has had some amazing results in the lab for preventing several types of cancer and I have been on that for over 10 years now.  Of course, I hope to go off it when I get to my goal weight but every little positive bit of medical news is good, right?

This is why I keep telling my husband that we need to have 10 kids!  That way when we're old there will always be someone around to wipe our asses and to give Mommy her vitamins and protein!

I do think about this Gina, simply because the Sleeve is newer in this country than the RNY,  I reallly wonder how it will hold up over time and what will happen if I did become ill and needs meds.  But, I don't spend a lot of time thinking about it, I mostly just think about how grateful  I am that I had the surgery.

I'm really hoping that my only son will be successful and help me out if I ever need it.  He promised that he will, and I trust that.  I just hope he partners with a woman that likes me!

Life has a way of throwing us curves.  My only daughter married someone in CA and moved there six years ago. I live in GA.

Wow Gina!!  Hadn't thought about this.  Of course I think daily about my food choices and vitamins, but hadn't considered when I'm not the one solely making the decisions.  Good point.  Maybe by the time we get there perhaps we may have come full circle and have some advocates on our side...I know not likely, but a girl can dream.  : )

"A later poster (can't remember her name) commented that she wants more out of life than exercising and watching what she eats. I agree. "

I don't agree. I wanted to be normal. Watching what you eat and exercising are what normal people do who want to be healthy and thin. All my friends and acquaintances do it and less then 1% of them have had WLS. The rest just do it because that's what it takes to have the live they want for as long as they want to live.

I think years of dieting have made it easy to think of watching what you eat and exercising as some sort of punishment, but it's not. At least it's not once you have a tool that lets you watch your weight instead of struggle with your weight. It makes a big difference IME when you know that successfully watching out for your health is actually possible instead of doomed to failure like it was when we were yo-yo dieting all the time.

Thank science for my VSG! It's let me be normal and now I have a prayer of having a normal relationship with food and exercise instead of a *****ly one!

As for Gina's original thought... I really can't think that far ahead. Which is odd, because I'm a person who tends to live in the future and have to sometimes FORCE myself to live in the present. But my future is usually only 3 years out. LOL

But 10 years from now, I'll be 12 years out from surgery and in my 60s. My plan is to still be racing only now I'll be winning my age group every time (due to lack of competition) and that means I'll qualify for Kona so I'll be a World Champion Triathlete! I intend to wor****il I die too, mostly due to not having the money saved up to retire but also because I prefer the structure and stimulation of work.

If things work out differently, I guess I'll have to make new plans...

Marie, you're so right about wise food choices and exercise being part of a healthy lifestyle.  I'm so happy to be part of a group here that accepts this and encourages each other.

Who knows, maybe I'll become an athlete too.  I'm already happiest when I'm out there moving.  I like that idea of you winning races!
