I posted this on the VSG forum, but want to post here as well.

I want to start practicing taking my supplements before the big day.

Any tips or advice on how you got them all in at the beginning, what supplements combined the most needs.  The list from my doctor is a little overwheming.  If take childrens vs adults, this calcium requires this mch vit D, theis supplement needs added iron etc.

Any insight would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I take all my vitamins separately because I malabsorb and I want my levels at optimum not "whatever". I follow Vitalady's plan for DS and eRNY which is more complicated than her VSG and Band schedule. This is one of those areas that you're going to have to adjust to if you want good health to go along with normal BMI. Here's a link to Vitalady basic VSG/band vitamin plan. It may be pretty complicated but it works if you adjust and tweak your vitamins as you get you lab results and start tracking them. Your surgeon nor his staff will do this for you. Its one of those things you will have to learn to do. Get copies of your labs and start a spreadshee****ch for iron and protein levels, watch your vitamin B-12, and watch your D, calcium and PTH. If you see a trend of iron going down or PTH going up, bring it to your doc's attention.

Good luck!

You don't need to take as much as RNY or DS patients but you do still need to take supplements every day.

These are the basics and if your surgeon recommend additional stuff, then by all means add those too.  First off, no childrens vitamins - they are for children.

Multi vitamin - centrum silver chewables are great to start out with - take 2 per day and you will be set for everything you need in a chewable.

Calcium citrate - 1500mg per day in 3 daily doses atleast 2 hours apart and not within 2 hours of your iron or thyroid medication, no more than 650mg a time.  You can get chewables at bariatric advantage or celebrate.com or pills- citrical maximums (5 per day - 2 at a time) or citrical petites(3 at a time - 3 times per day)

Iron - Feosol (carbonyl iron plus vitamin C) make sure the box says carbonyl iron - for every 30mg of iron, you need 200mg of vitamin C - other option is Tender Iron from vitalady.com - 60mg per capsule with vitamin C already in them.  They also have25mg chewables for the beginning but you need to take more of them and add vitamin C.

Vitamin B12 - 1000mcg sublingual daily

Vitamin D- 5,000-10,000 units of Dry D3 daily from vitalady.com - D3-5 (5,000 unit capsules)
