Getting Back to Bad Habits?

Ok, so as you all know, I was stalled for a good long time, despite doing everything right.  Well, I went back to work and was instantly pressured about eating and there is a constant parade of food under my nose.  I ate a small piece of eggplant parmesan the first night back, and then a couple of crackers another night, and then yesterday all of my coworkers went for pizza.  I had thai chicken on a thin crust, and only ate one piece, but still.

The thing is, since I started putting these carbs and "junky" foods back into my diet, not only has my stall broken, I've lost more than five lbs in nine days.  I feel almost like this is positive reinforcement for my bad eating, and I'm afraid that I won't be able to continue following the rules because the cheating is what jump-started the weight loss.

Please smack me around a bit so I start behaving again!

Those carby things are known as stall breakers but you can't hang on to them for long. Get back on track ASAP, babeeee!

Yep - what Gina said.

I used to do that when I was sitting for awhile without the scale moving - a day or so of "not so good" eating, and I'd lose weight - but, you have to STOP doing that or you definitely will not lose any more! (or very slowly).  It makes your body think you're not starving it and kick into burning mode.  Also it tended to "clean me out"... and of course that always helps with the scale too!  LOL

I have totally noticed that too! When I slack, I'll drop a few pounds. BUT, big picture, I know it is not a sustainable way to lose.

Example:
My friend had surgery 3 months before me. She has been losing consistently, but eats crap. Like 1/2 a donut here and there and doesn't worry about her protein count. She also doesn't exercise.  I was kind of annoyed that she was doing such a good job losing by not following the rules. Well, she is now 8 months out and it seems she is done losing because at this point that 1/2 a donut has turned into a full one and a little crap here and there has tunred into more crap. I'm 3 months behind her and just passed up her weight. So, long term following the rules has been to my benefit.

So, using the carby stuff occassionally to break a stall is a good thing. Just don't continue down that path!

Oh boy, we must have the same friend.  My friend has surgery 3 months before me also and was "doing it her way" from the very beginning.  Well after only 6 months she came to a stand still and has stayed there.  She was eating nachos, pizza, bean and cheese tacos, biscuits, mac n' cheese and so on.  She'll be 2 years out in Oct and still weighs 235 and I weigh 143 and are the same height.

I'm with Gina and Jody.  Increasing your calories during a stall will get you losing again but you can't continue or it will eventually catch up with you.

An occasional "treat" won't hurt you, but it sounds like you are having somethingalmost every night.  That's where it's going to get you.

Glad to hear!  It sounds like you have things under control.  It's good you wrote about it.  Sharing helps us become aware and sometimes keeps us on track.

Glad to hear your stall broke!!!

I have a different take on this whole thing, and it is NOT a popular one on this forum.  That is to say...I try to maintain my calories between 800-1000 (more than most), carbs 80-100 g(DEFINATELY more than most) and Protein 75-100g, (less than several).  The higher carb count allows me to eat more or less whatever I like (within reason...and mostly good carbs), (I don't even try to count fat), but it is not a SEVERLY STRICT DIET...mostly a  more normal eating that I would do during maitanance I guess, just less calories.  I have been loosing about 2 lbs a week, which I am good with....it might be faster (dunno) if I restricted carbs to 30, increased protein to greater than 100, exercised more then 45 min 4 days a week.  (at 3.5 months I have lost 57 lbs total)(have had 2 stalls, one 10 days, one 12 days).  I am just not willing at this point to get severe.  Again, my is not the "popular" view point on this forum, but it is the view of my NUT and doctor.

I think each of us has to find a way to do this.  I guess I admire those that can be SOOOO strict with themselves with diet and with 1-2 hr work outs a day for so long. I don't seem to be able/willing to it at this point, and I am doing well, in my opinion, doing it the way I am.

I hope I am not booted off the forum for my views.  I have esp. enjoyed the support here and there are a great much of gals/guys here.  I would hate to do this alone.  I am being brave (for me) saying what I have.

I say all this because I hope you won't beat yourself up, and to know that others are "successful" being a little less strict.  Hope any of this helps.  The best to you finding the path you want to take in this weight loss journey.

Awww - Jane - you're not going to get kicked off the board for expressing what works for you!  Each person loses different and has a different approach.  You're doing a great job!
