Remind me why to eat slowly

I had the pleasure of presenting my testimony at a weight loss surgery seminar last night. It was a small group, so it was much more conversational and it went well.

During the surgeon's presentation, he mentioned that it should take about 30 minutes to eat a meal. I didn't ask any questions during his presentation, but I completely forgot about them saying that when I went through my nutritional classes. I NEVER take that long to complete a meal. I'm still a fairly fast eater. I do chew my food really well, but it just doesn't take that long for me.

Do you remember if there is any real importance to eating slowly?

Hmm, I know that if I eat too fast it sometimes comes back up!  It's only happened a couple of times.  There must be other reasons, but I'm not really sure either.  Hopefully someone else will chime in.

I think it's just because of the possibility of it coming back up. I know that I can eat a "slider" meal (chili, yogurt, breakfast bowl) fast with no problems, but if I attempt to eat actual meat as quickly, even chewing it very well, my pouch revolts. I really need breaks between bites and a SLOW pace for dense protein or vegetables... fruits though can go quickly.

Eh - it's just weird.

My surgeon told me to eat slower so I will realize when I am full and not just eat everything on my plate.  If I eat it all in 10-15 minutes then I'm through eating and my mind hasn't had a chance to tell me I'm full.

It is also to help with getting food stuck - if I eat really fast it tends to get stuck more and then I get sick.

I have always been a fast eater and this has been one of the hardest things for me.

What Linda said - your brain needs to recognize when your pouch has had enough food - and especially early out its very important.

I'm a very fast eater too - and now I'm going on 2 years out I find I'm back to my old ways.  I have to keep reminding mysef to eat slow,...

Last night I was very hungry at dinner and sat down with my family to eat a hamburger. They hall had buns etc...I had the burger on my plate..I ate about 3/4 or it in about 5 minutes when I realized that that was going to be too much. I was in pain for an hour and a half after...trying to vomit..but not being able to...I just ate too fast and did not listen to my stomach...it's REALLY painful and if you eat stuff that doesn't slide too fast you get in trouble..If you're at a restaurant or social thing it's really bad because you are foaming..burping...and feeling really sick...so that was my reminder. Of course we all need these every now and then to remind ourselves the stomach is not getting any bigger even though we are getting used to it...SEAVIEW

I find that if I eat too fast I end up doing either eating too much or not chewing well enough.  But I can't drag it out 30 minutes, either.  I try for fifteen minutes.  That's usually more than enough time for me.

Totally off topic but I just realized that I follow you on twitter!  I'm Shelbell731.

They say it takes 20 min. for the signal that we are full to reach the brain. So meals should take at least 20 min.

OTOH, stomachs start emptying about 20-30 after we eat in normos. It's faster in us altered folks, but I don't think anyone knows exactly how faster.

Therefore, if I took 30 min. to eat a meal, I can eat a lot more than if I stop myself around 15-20 min. In fact, that's something I do when I want to eat more. I eat until full, wait 20-30 min. and eat the rest. So it's not something I recommend unless you have a need to get more calories in.

Congrats on doing your testimony!!!   I wish I had a local support group.  I would love to be able to share my story and encourage newbies.

My surgeon didn't tell to me take 30 minutes he told me NOT to eat longer than 30 minutes.  I think that means that I am supposed to eat until I feel full.  It doesn't mean I should eat some...stop....and then eat more just because it hasn't been 30 minutes.
