Weight loss rate- intake
I'm 10 weeks post VSG- lost 17 lbs pre-op (1,000 cal hi protein diet, as I could not take Optifast)-
21 lbs post-op - The last few weeks my weight loss has been 1 lb a week. My intake is less than 800 cal a day. It's hard to get that in as I have NO hunger at all. I have been focusing on protien and still need a shake a day to keep to 60-70gm/day.
Is this what I should expect? I see many posts about upping calorie intake to speed weight loss and am wondering.
I was 191 lbs this am. Goal - 150/160 (5'7")

If you can squeeze one in, you might try another protein shake. But, I think you might need to add a few calories, either in protein or fresh veggies (preferably protein). Looks like you've been doing great though.

Everyone is different and loses at a different rate. At 10 weeks out I was probably getting 400 calories a day, always got my water and at least 60 grams of protein. I am just now above 600 calories (and some days still not) and I get 80-100 grams of protein. I have also worked out 6-7 days a week. Also, what is your carb intake? Most people who have been fast losers eat less than 30 a day, and I have pretty much always followed that. Some days I am at 35, but I also run 3-4 days a week so I probably need it. I need to up my calories a little, I got stuck for awhile when I ate 500, so I upped to 600 and started losing again.
Several reasons-
1- the key ingredient is high fructose corn syrup- well know to trigger migraines - I didn't want to be sick for two weeks. Aside from the agony, I don't get paid If I don't work.
2- I work driving around the country providing nursing care. Couldn't be sure I would be able to manage if I needed to spend a lot of time in the bathroom with the trots.
3- I hated the idea of all that artificial 'food' going into my body. I've been keeping away from pre-prepared food for several years- rarely eat out at drive thrus etc. Mostly prepare all my food from scratch.
So I put myself on a diet equivalent to the Optifast for 3 weeks- 1 week extra just to be sure. I lost 17 lbs pre-op. Pretty good considering I'm a light weight. Some who are heavier didn't lose anywhere near what I did.
The docs and many patient's like optifast- no difficulty making choices, counting, carbs, calories etc. To my mind it's not right. If they want us to change how we eat post-op- shouldn't they start pre-op? I would suggest that they trial it-- get all weighed - both restricted cal/carb and optifast, at a doc office- and call the number in halfway- no surgery if you hadn't lost a certain amount.

I didn't get his approval- tried early on discussing it and he was not moving. So I made an executive decision. ;) The goal of Optifast is to lose weight- I lost it.
As for the VSG- refuse to sign for RNY- do you have medical reasons? I don't know your surgeon- but stick to your guns. I had an iron clad medical indication and it was hard with Klein, it might be easier at TWH.
