So let ask............is coffee a depressant? Sounds stupid! Right? You all know my addiction to S/F vanilla iced coffee's from McD's. I have to have atleast one a day. I've been like that for a few months already. Love 'em to death!!! Well my DSL and I always have 1 in the evening. Just last night we were going to go to McD's and she tells me. "You'll never guess what your sister just said to me"? I asked her what? " Well, she says you guys need to stop drinking so much coffee because that is a depressant." WTF.....I know its a diaretic and a stimulant but depressant that's the first. I guess that's why I can't get out of bed like her!! LOL. She doesn't even drink coffee to top it off.Everything that I do is always wrong or its bad for me. WTF do I do with these people!!me. It pissed me off so bad that I couldn't even see straight anymore. I try to let those things go but it just urks me so bad!!! I guess I better stop drinking my coffee because I'll probably slice my wrists soon! Wouldn't she like that. HMMMMMMMMMMMMM

As far as I know something can't be a stimulant and a depressent at the same time. Maybe I am wrong but I've never heard of coffee being a depressant. Why would people drink it as a pick me up if it was a depressant. You should have told her she's a depressant! Sorry, I;m just so sick of advice from people who don't know anything about us.

Don't worry about it! Your just so lucky that she's not your sister. Imagine dealing with her everyday! I have to see her everyday because she still lives at home with my parents and my mom takes care of my kids. So she's a constant pain!!! It be different if I could say she's young and naive but she's 26 and has a daughter herself! So she has no excuse for her stupidity! But like I said anything that I do or like or have done is always bad, bad, bad!! She's just really ignorant like my other sister and she's 42. Thank God, the stupidity gene missed me! Atleast I think it did...lol. NO I know it did because I am nothing like them!!!

Hi Liz,

The caffeine in coffee is a stimulant, not a depressant. I'm not sure where she got this information, but it might be from her ass... lol.

Also, it's the caffeine, not the coffee. So, if you drink de-caff, its not even an issue.

Oh, and it turns out caffeine isn't a diuretic after all. There are a bunch of studies where they show that you don't pee out any more in a 24 hour period than you would if hadn't drank it even though it makes some people pee right after drinking it.

I have noticed that there's days when I drink it and I pee like crazy and days when I hardly pee enough. But the days that I hardly pee I do notice I get really swollen feet and hands. So I know I'm retaining water. But on the days I don't drink coffee I'm constantly grazing throughtout the day. When I do drink coffee I notice that it supresses my appetite. But i'll drink I believe its 8 oz drink and that will last me to noon time. Its cold coffee though. My sister just has to put everything that I do in a negative zone. Don't know why but she does.

caffeine is not a depressant.  However, like other mood altering substances, caffeine acts on your brain by mimicking certain neurotransmitters, which especially with chronic use causes your brain and neurochemistry to supress natural production of those chemicals, so when you STOP taking it, you then are likely to experience an induced depression, at least temporarily.  Like other drugs (including opiates and amphetamines), with chronic use as your body attempts to regain equilibirum by dropping it's own chemical production, you experience less and less effect from the substance, known as "tolerance."  Soon you have to consume caffeine just to feel normal (the stage i was at just before surgery).  If you are already disposed to depression, you may well exascerbate your condition when you monkey around with your neurotransmitter levels.  Especially taking something like caffeine, which is going to tend to "spike" your levels and then leave you on the rebound rather quickly.

I've read things about caffeine also causing your adrenal system to burn out, and it's possible role in insulin resistance, but I don't have much information or know if any of that is true.  I do know the bit of about the neurotransmitters is backed up by research.

Babee, direct your sister to WebMD and tell her that you have a "mad Brazilian" friend that told ya to tell her to stop BSing before doing her homework . Coffee is good.

"Want a drug that could lower your risk of diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and colon cancer? That could lift your mood and treat headaches? That could lower your risk of cavities?" (<- WebMD)
