pre-surgery weight loss

I am waiting for the call back from my 'patient advocate'.  I am consuming the message boards.  How are so many people losing 10-15 plus pounds before surgery?

My doctors office is putting me on a liquid diet for 2 weeks before the procedure........

This reduces the size of your liver to make it easier on the surgeon and your safety.

I lost 15 pounds in three weeks of pre-op liquid dieting.  I was supposed to consume 80+ grams of protein drinks each day, and could have five small servings of other foods, specifically green vegetables, SF jello, and SF FF pudding.

I did the ATKINS Diet... I was STRICT and did the induction phase for about 10 weeks.... I lost over 60lbs and it was EASY!!!!!!  I was a carb-a-holic (still am, I'm just in recovery!), after the first 5 days or so (lots of headaches, hunger, etc), I felt GREAT and the weight FELL off... I highly recommend this!

Katrina,

I am a patient of Dr. Lavine's also.  Have you met him yet?  Does waiting for the return calls drive you crazy?

I saw Chris and bought all of the PrescripFit.  I cannot use due to the artificial sweeteners.  She did not recommend a set amount to lose, just said lose.  Maybe I'll understand more after I see the nutrionist.

Do you have a surgery date yet?

Dana -
Due to not liking the first surgeon I saw, and a set of blood clots in my lungs cancelling my original surgery - it was over a year from when I started pursuing surgery until I actually HAD surgery. During that time I attended the support group for my WLS surgeon and saw a nutritionist monthly - gradually I made changes here and there in my eating habits because this is a change in lifestyle - not a diet - and I lost 79 pounds in that year before surgery. Yes, I lost 8 or so on the 2 week liquid diet pre-op (and its bumpy the first 3 days or so, to say the least) but its all worth it in the end. That made my surgery safer and easier to recover from - AND its 79 pounds less that I have to lose now post-op. My weight loss has been a little slower than some people experience in the first 3 months (I am exactly 3 months out TODAY) but 44 pounds in 3 months is ok with me, and I barely recognize the woman in the BEFORE photo. Sure, I still have a lot of weight to lose, but I didn't put it on over night. Also - start taking at least multi vitamins and calcium now - get in the habit and go into your surgery with good nutritional levels.

Good luck with everything - have a safe, uncomplicated surgery!

Dana,

I had Gastric Bypass in June 1996 - lost a 150 lbs but my doctor was Dr. Thomas.   I have met Dr. Lavin and know several people who used him and were very well satisfied.   Myself, I was very well pleased with Dr. Thomas.    Waiting for the return call drove me crazy but they called me back within 4 days.   They were waiting for my insurance approval.

I love PrescripFit.   In fact I am going next week to purchase some more plus have a meeting with Vests the nutritionist.  17 months ago I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer & have put on about 40 lbs with the 2 chemos I was on.  I finally was released earlier in the week since I am Cancer Free so I want to get off the weight I gained.

I highly recommend these doctors plus highly recommend Prescriptfit.   I had no problem with the chocolate flavor.

Good luck,
Midge
