I am new to this forum and new to the weight loss surgery process. I've been contemplating it for about a year and have my first consult in 2 weeks. Please give me your opinions on the better way to go - RNY or lap band for someone with 100+ lbs to lose. Thanks!!

Welcome, first I would do research on both of the surgeries that you are looking into, nobody can make that choice for you and research is the best way to see which would be the best surgery for you as well as when you talk to the dr.  Do the pros and cons of each and decide based on the information that you have.  I started about a year ago myself.

My local area has a meeting for Pre and Post surgery.  I went last night and got a lot of information on both.  Check your local area and find out if they have a monthly meeting available.  You can better information from the people who have experienced these surgeries.  It is all about what you think is best for you and how much you need to lose.

I had the Lapband in 12/07 and have had nothing but problems with it.   I am in the process of having a revision done.  Which is to remove the Lap-Band and do a RNY.  I would not recommend the Lap-Band for anybody.

What kind of problems and where did you have your surgery done?

I have over 200 to lose and I choose RNY, mainly because it is harder too cheat. When I am bad I must be punished.

Why not Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy?  Does your surgeon offer it yet?  It has worked out really well for my husband.

A lot of people on these boards say their surgery is the best and only good one but they all have their pros and cons.  You have to look at all the facts and decide which is right for YOU .  I had a VSG and felt that was the option I wanted and I love it.

Hey, how did I get back in May posts?? lol
Jeremiah 29:11-13 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.  Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.  And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

a lot of what it boils down to is:

1) what you can afford
2) the amount of physical change you feel comfortable with
3) the lifestyle you want to lead
4) the aftercare you are willing to put up with (including nutritional supplements, bloodwork, etc.)
5) the reasons underlying your weight problems
6) your current physical condition, including comorbities.  Some surgeries can cure certain comorbidities, some make them worse, others are uneffected.

i knew after my first seminar at my selected surgeons' clinic which surgery i wanted, but i'm glad i did a lot of supporting research.  there are a lot of people who say "if i just knew X i woulda done it different".  I don't feel that way at all.  I knew exactly what i was getting into.

this website is an incredible resource, so i congratulate you on finding it.  i don't think i would be doing nearly as well mentally or physically if i hadn't found OH.

RNY 6/16/09 - Last weighed 10/27/2011 weighed 151 lost 52 pounds  66% toward personal goal  of 125, six pounds from unofficial unpretentious goal of 145lbs......basically very happy.   boo-rah, RNY!
