Hi,

I am 45 yrs old and am starting the process with my first consult with WL surgeon on September 12. I have had hypothyroid since 12 years. I am trying to see if WLS works for people with hypothyroid. Please respond.

Hello, I am 40.  I had surgery at 39, and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when my my daughter was born, 12 years ago.  After several attempts to find out why I wasn't producing milk for her with the military doctors, I finally went to a civilian M.D., (and paid out of pocket), who discoverred it.  Though it was too late for me to lactate for her, she had to have formula..... she's a sassy preteen now... ANNNNYWAy, I had surgery last year in July, I was at 240 lbs and have dropped to 138!  A size 24 to a size 6 and i am TOTALLLY LOVING life loving to live etc...

Once I started losing weight, I thoughT that I could stop taking synthroid.... ummmm NO!  I went in for just annual stuff, and primary care manager had blood tests done and mine were off the charts.  I am now taking 100 micrograms and have been doing so since JANUARY.   I just wanted to share that bit of information with you, that though we lose the weight we still will be on synthroid for the rest of our lives,  I have mine checked every 3-4 months, along with B-12 levels and iron.

Best of luck to ya, and I hope this helps :)

Hi..I am also 45 with hypothyroidism and at the beginning of my journey . I was reading  alot about  how surgery for us could be a higher risk so I asked my PCP about it. She told me as long as you are taking your meds and have it under control, the surgery will not be a problem. I plan on asking the surgeon and nutritionist more about this. If you learn more about it please do share and I will do the same.Thanks..

hi, I have hypothyroid as well, I started my journey at 305 and I am down to 153.  Before the surgery I lost 80 and since than the rest, and I would like to lose another 22.  Are you on any medication?  I take a generic for levoxel(spelling).  I am tested every 3 months, and my thyroid is basically destroyed, no metabolism.

I am also on levoxyl(generic)175 and my thyroid is basically destroyed with very poor metabolism. My dose also fluctuates  between 150 -175 with maintaining the same level of activity and day to day stress. Did your dose change following surgery.

I have been had hypothyroidism since the age of 13.  I also have PCOS and began my weight loss journey 4 years ago with a lap band.  Then converted to at RNY on 5/29/2207.  I have lost a total of 242 lbs.  It will work for you if you follow the rules and exercise , exercis, and use weights....my secret in the last 10mo.  I also live close to you...so feel free to email me....
