Hey ya'll. I am on my 6  month supervised diet, will see my surgeon in september for the first time.  I have lost 18 lbs in 3 months by just eating less.  I started working out 3 weeks ago and i am doing a great job.  treadmill, eliptical and core every time i work out and alternating lower and upper body.

My question is, How can i keep from adding muscle where theres fat and keep the scale from going up?  I know muscle weighs more than fat, so i dont want to show a gain when i weigh in on the 24th.  any suggestions?  I can do about 35 minutes total on the eliptical and treadmill, and another 30 minutes for core and arms/legs.

Renee,

If you do not want to put on muscle mass inplace of fat then concentrated on a few exercises the days you lift and do more repetitions.  this will tone you more than put muscle weight one.  But you still need to be consistant with your diet.  I am fighting the diet issue myself and am going to start back on track again on monday.

Muscle definitely weighs more than fat, but I doubt that you'll build up so much muscle mass that you gain weight. The aerobic exercise on the treadmill and eliptical burns calories and fat, and the weight training should firm and tone your muscle, especially if you're using light weights with more reps. Just stick to your eating plan and keep exercising. Congrats. on your loss so far!

As the poster above mentioned muscle weighs more than fat, it also burns calories and takes up less space than fat.

I wouldn't worry about gaining much weight from muscle during your 6 month diet, it takes months of heavy lifting to gain weight from lifting.....plus performing cardio will slow down your bulking process, although this depends on the intensity/duration of the cardio performed.

You will feel better, get and look toner, build bone, and speed up metabolisim long before you gain enough weight from lifting. All great reasons to continue on with lifting........I have always loved and believe in lifting weights

Women don't gain muscle as fast as men, we just don't alot of the testosterone needed. There are alot of other factors that come into play..... diet, reps, weight lifted

Even if you did gain a few pounds (and it would most likely take months to gain 5 pounds of muscle) it would be more beneficial than not lifting at all......

Bottom line is if you enjoy doing it, the benefits will more than outweigh the small amount of weight you may gain if any.

Good luck!!!!

I've been weight training for 8 yrs and went from size 26-28 to 18-20 pretty much weighing the same weight . 1 lb. of muscle and 1 lb. of fat weigh the same they just look different like Michele said above me. 1lb. of muscle is compact and tight and 1 lb. of fat looks like fluffy pillows.
