Is it too late?

Hi all. I am not quite 40 yet. not till January 13th. I went to the gyn today and asked about having a baby now that I am finally losing weight. My hubby and I have always wanted kids and have never used bc in all 13 years of marriage. She refered me to a reproductive specialist and said she was not very hopeful. She did say the specialist may have another solution but I am still super sad. Anybody here have kids after 40?

Lin,

Don't be sad.  See the specialist and see what they have to say before you give in (briefly) to sadness.  I too have always wanted to have children, but never had a husband or even boyfriend.  Now 3 years after RNY, I'm engaged to be married and I'm still hopeful that we may have a child (although I know it may not happen).  The reason I have such hope is that 2 months ago my sister had my beautiful precious niece.  Back in September 2007, at the age of 42, she got pregnant (without doing anything - she was due to start hormone shots the following month).  So there is hope!  See your specialist, get informed and then go from there.  You'll be in my prayers :-)

Anything is possible. I tried for 12 yrs to get preg. and was told that i couldn't get preg without surgical intervention. But after losing about 35lbs i got preg. I was 32 then. Well, at 39 i met and married hubby #2. I was 300lbs at the time, didn't want anymore kids really, but hubby didn't have any and wanted one. So i didn't take any bc, although at my weight i didn't really think i would get preg. During the "honey moon" phase i lost about 50lbs and 9 mths into the marraige i got preg. SURPRISE!!! I was 40 when i delivered a perfect little girl. When you lose a lot of weight, your body is flooded with hormones making getting preg. real easy. That's why WLS Dr's tell you to take bc after WLS. The hormones go crazy.  Good luck and God bless.

Honey,
Give it some more time. I too got pregnant after losing weight. This was 18 years ago, but I had tried for years to have my son, then I went to my doctor and she said I needed to lose weight. I lost 50 pounds and I was starting to give up on getting pregnant...then BAM..I was pregnant!!! Don't give up, you'll be a mommy soon!

Also,  even if you end up not being able to get pregnant (which many women get pregnant into their 40's and with losing weight I would say you certainly have the possibility), but there is always adoption to consider as well.  I have two daughters that were adopted from China and they are a wonderful gift and addition to our family.  You certainly shouldn't give up on having children, there are many options to consider.

See the specialist. That is the only way you are going to get any real answers. I to tried to get pregnant for 2-3 years, no luck. Then I went to a specialist and he discovered I had a genetic "mistake" called Mosaic Turner's Syndrome. Basically I won't be able to have kids, my eggs are not good and there aren't alot of them, So we tried to adopt twice- both times it fell through. I made peace with the whole "wanting a baby" thing and now wouldn't have it any other way. There was a reason for God not putting a child with me and I accept that. Besides, everyone wants a baby, no one wants a Teenager! haha!!!
Hang in there!

I sent you a message about being "elderly." HAHA. I have had quiet a few friends have children after 40. just more to watch for. So I say go for it! I had problems and went through fertility. It was quite possibly due to my weight. So hubby and I tried, differrent things and BOOM. Pregnant!

I just got the reports back from the specialist and all the tests for hubby  and i came out good so I guess we just have to wait a little while so I can lose more weight, the surgeon says wait 2 years but I dont want to wait that long. I guess I just have to be patient and keep working my tool so that I am really ready to physically have and take care of a baby when the  time comes. Thanks for all your encouragement!!!

I was forty when I had my son Zachary. It was before WLS. I have endometriosis. I took clomid. Had a shot of something to increase ovulation, and we also did IUI. I did the same thing, without the shot to have my son Jacob. I have a 6 year old and a two year old. Don't give up hope. Sometimes your reproductive system needs a little help.
