I had my RNY surgery 02/13 - I gained 8 pounds while in the hospital from the IV fluids, and am finally back to where I was - however I feel like I am retaining fluid, my doctor said no more diarectics/water pills just wondering if anyone else has been taken off these after surgery.

I plan to call the office tomorrow but thought I would see what everyone here had to say.

Hey Michelle, Definitely stay away from the diuretics!! My bp med had a slight diuretic in it & I was told to continue taking it & the next thing I know I was dizzy & feeling horrible!! Long story short the diuretic sucked the potassium out of my body... it was extremely low... so much so that my pcp called me at home at 8:30pm to tell me to get to CVS right away - they called in a potassium supplement for me!!! Now everything is great & they changed the bp med & should be off of it soon!! Definitely give decaf tea a try - it works well!! What did they say at the office?  Cece

They said to drink tea! lol and water - I am drinking no less than 5 bottles of water each day (16 oz.).
I also take a BP pill with a slight diaretic in it, I thought the dizy part was when the BP was low, but could be the potassium being low - I wonder how does that affect your body?

Talk soon!

Michelle, If you are still feeling dizzy call your pcp - they prescribed your bp med & will need to be the ones to adjust it!! My dizziness happened about 3-4 weeks post-op!! Have them draw blood & check your levels!! That's what mine did instead of assuming it was from low bp & they were right! They cut my dosage in half, removed the diuretic & everything has been great!! I make sure I eat spinach at least once or twice a week too (good source of potassium & better than having to take the horse pill supplements!!) - I can't handle bananas - they were iffy at best pre-op & are no better now!!  Trust your body... when something doesn't feel right err on the side of caution!!! My pcp is so happy that I do that!!! I don't go running to her all the time but I do call the nurses when I feel I need too!!! I haven't been wrong yet... thank god!!! Good luck!!! Cece

I was on a bp med that contained a diuretic , what happened to me was I almost went into renal failure as a result of the med. About a month post-op my doctor called me and told me to get to the hospital right away. She found this out through blood work. Since I've been off, no more problems. Listen to your doc, as he knows better .Good Luck, also exercise will help with water weight.
