I just turned 32 last week, and am scheduled for lap RNY next week. I am 5'4.5", and weigh about 280. I am interested to know if any of you out there were a similar height and weight preop, and how your skin turned out once you got close to your goal. Do you think that plastic surgery will be reasonable or even required when I am close to my goal weight?

I just had my tummy tuck last week. I started out at 240 and lost to 145 so almost 100 lbs. Size 22/24 to 10's or some 8's. My plastic surgeon only took off about 3.75 lbs of skin and tissue off of my middle. Your mileage may vary. I was saggy for about a year and it never tightened up--just had to come off. I am almost 2 years post op.

RNY on 11/15/05 with
Polly; I'm 33, 5'4" and started out at 253 lbs. Currently, I'm at 187 and in terms of sag and skin, there's nothing that I couldn't live with. I've got another 50-60 lbs. to go, so we'll see then. I have a feeling, I'll notice a lot more sag when I get to goal. I haven't been below 172 since my wedding nearly 9 years ago. I think the longer the skin has been stretched, the harder it is for it to go back. But, with all the money I'm saving on food, I'll have quite a stash towards whatever PS insurance won't cover. Everyone is different, you'll just have to wait and see. Blessings, Jennifer 253 / 187 / ???

Hi Polly! I'm 31, 5'5" and had surgery at 264 pounds. I carry most of my weight in my tummy, a nice genetic gift from my dad! I have now lost 100 pounds and am down to size 8. In clothes, I look great, no major hanging or grossness! I want a tummy tuck, but do not need one whatsoever. I do work out at a gym 5 days a week, too, and it has really helped! Naked, I look like just about any other slightly overweight lady who has had kids. PS-- I'm a nurse so I see naked people all the time and I have lots to compare to! So I guess what I'm saying is it depends on where you carry your weight. If it's all in your tummy, you might need some ps. Good luck with your surgery and don't worry about the skin issue!
