Happy Pre-Thanksgiving everyone!

Finally decided to jump off the failed dieting band wagon and take the 1st step towards a permanent healthy me.  I have sent in my paperwork for the obesity treatment center in my area and have my informational meeting on 12/7/10!

Went to my PCP yesterday, who was too busy to see me so I got a PA.. who came in the room and was 50lbs+ heavier than me.  Who on more than one occassion during my physical told me all my problems were because I was lazy, eating like a pig, and not moving enough.  That she would not and never will recommend WLS and I should see a PT specialist for my leg and feet pains, join Nutri System and make the real changes rather than cheating my way out of fat!!

UHM HELLO WHACKO - I have been there and done all of it!  I do not need a lecture from YOU, what I need is a physical to see what is truly wrong with me besides being mobidly obese and to make sure I have made the right choice in entering the program.   To her I am not morbidly obese, I can still walk and talk; I still function daily.  She would only recommend WLS if I was unable to function.  Ya that's smart let's wait until I weigh a ton and cannot care for myself or my 3 kids anymore!!

FRUSTARTING - but I shook it off... however the fears of surgery, of being denied by the program and/or my insurance (whom I had to call myself to make sure my plan covers WLS - and it DOES), plus the lack of support from my loved ones is starting to eat at me.

How long were any of you on the program before you had your surgery scheduled?
Complications galore with all the reading I have done - anyone have any of them and how are you now??
I take all the vitamins they recommend after surgery now, how will they affect me after surgery?
How soon did you see a change in yourself?
How soon did you see a change in your vitality??

I want this so bad it hurts but at the same time I am so afraid I am going to be pushed out the door because I am not the right candidate! Or I will be one of those people who it does not work for. Or worse be one of the 1 out of 50 who die!!

Having this surgery or even thinking about it is harder than deciding to have 3 kids!!

Surgery is a huge decision and glad to see that you are doing your research! I am actually still pre op, but I can answer some of the questions for you :)

The time in the program really depends on your insurance company and your surgery type. I made a few friends at my first meeting and everyone had different rules. One has to have a monitored weight loss for 6 months before approval, one has to be monitored for 3 months and one had instant approval. She had her surgery less than a month after we met! I an a self payer, because my insurance excludes ALL bariatrics. I had my first "informational" appointment on October 17th and I am scheduled for surgery on 01/04/11.

Complications really depend on your surgery choice. One may have more ricks than another. My mother has the RNY seven years ago. Because she didn't take all of her vitamin at the right time she has had significant bone loss and has developed osteoporosis. Again, she didn't follow her regimen to the T, but she did take her vits most of the time.

I have opted for the VSG because it is least invasive. I would rather not have anything rerouted. Hope I answered a few of your questions and sorry its so long!

Hi. I had the RNY in July of 2010. I started getting serious about weight loss in December 2009. I have lost 100 lbs. I would do it again in a second, no second thoughts. Now the first couple of weeks afterward, I thought I would die from the pain, but that was short lived. I was in a 6mth program, group meetings and classes, etc. I had to see my doc or a nutri each month and go to group meeting each month for 6 months in a row. I had to have certain tests done like a breathing test and blood tests. Then a letter was sent to my insurance, but insurance was already aware of me doing this and I had a nurse or rep with insurance keeping in touch with me. I also had to see a psych. It went pretty quickly. I started praticing things I would have to do after surgery, before hand, such as taking small bites and tasting different protein shakes. The only problem I have had is sometimes I eat to quickly or do not chew enough and it cause me to throw up or have pain. I do have to work to drink enough fluids. And that is important to keep the weigh loss going. Hope this helps.

How bad WAS the pain?  I heard from some people it was nothing and they were back to work and life a week later.  Then other people like yourself say the pain is hard and it takes weeks to go away.  I can only imagine the pain is like child birth, you know it hurts, swear you will NEVER do it again because it is so bad.. yet years later you are pregnant again and excited to have him/her!! The last baby was o' natural (NOT BY CHOICE) and I "remember" the pain but actually now 7 months later remember it was super painful and wanted to die from it but cant tell you now to describe it as I cannot even begin to remember how it felt.

I am in a program... they figure 6 months from the information session (so surgery in March) and I am excited but sooo nervous! I watch YouTube videos of other RNY patients, watching their pains and trials, and then see them 6 months after surgery and am amazed at how they look.  I want that tool, I need that tool... I hate how I feel and even worse how I look!

I am so worried I will spend weeks, months, getting sick or not doing the right things.  I cannot start working out and drinking weight loss protein shakes until my 1st appt with the treatment center PA next week.  I want to get into the rythmn of how to eat, workout, and to start concentrating on letting go of my "need" for food.  To start to eat the way I need to NOW so I dont have so many issues after surgery.

I read, and read, and read... I look for ways to help with the after effects of the surgey.. Biotin, Silica, and/or Omega 3 for hair lose and thinning; added fat/good carbs to help with keeping the gall stones at bay because of the added proteins..

I need and want as much knowledge before I get to the hospital for surgery so I am not surprised at how bad or good things will be.

Thank you for your insight... So anxious for the end result... even if it means a lifetime of dedication to get there.

Hi...I had all the same questions and was lurking around here before I joined to get answers.  But, really everyone is different.  I've read stories were some people have had no problems and others tons of problems.  I think it's just everyones body is different and they had previous diagnosis before surgery to.  I had Gerd , gallbladder sludge and leg swelling before surgery and only one month out now they are both gone.  I did Lap Rny and had my gallbladder out.  In all honesty birth was definatly worse.  It really isn't that bad.  I mean your sore but it's tolerated.  The worse for me was the extreme gas after the first week.  It was just sitting in my stomach or pouch or wherever and was killing me.  But, figured it out and lactose intolerate for a while but when you get home make sure you just take your meds and get naps in:) Then I got shingles the same week of the surgery so that was aaarrrggggghhhh.     I went back to work 2 weeks later and was fine at work but would crash when I got home I was so exhausted.  But, alot of people take FMLA and I didn;t tell anyone beside my mom/husband about the surgery so I just took a two week vacation from work and said I was getting my gallbladder out.  Then came back 25 lbs lighter! lol   I'm 1 month out today and honestly...I would do it again in a heartbeat.  Some days I'll be honest it sucks when I screw up and eat something to fast and swallow and feel like someone knocked me in the chest.  But, that's my own stupidity.  Practice now chewing your food slowly to little pieces. I hope you will do great this board is awesome for help and awesome people:)

The first 4 days were pretty bad. I was back at work in a couple of weeks. But it was 6 wks before I could lift, pull, push, etc. I slept separate from my husband for a couple of weeks so I would not get bumped or bounced. I have not had a baby, but that sounds like what I would compare it to. I told my husband the day of coming out of surgery that there was no way I was giving birth. But no, I am ready to have a baby 5 months later. So that is probably right.
