Good morning all

My name is Liz and Im new to this site. I have a consult date on January 14, 2010 and was wondering what I can do to prepare.

I almost feel like I should pig out and gain weight so they will DEFENITLY help me but, I know thats not good so I wont.

Im 5'3 260 lbs. BMI of 46. I want to get the Gastric Bypass RNY.

Im on state insurance.

My health problems include: Asthma, mild sleep apnea, high bad cholesterol, low good cholesterol, high blood pressure, tons of aches and pains (not yet discussed with any Doc.) and most bothersome.. = anxiety + depression.

I dont have any "record" or receipts of past diets. But am always trying the latest thing. The diet that has worked best for me in the past is Herbalife.
2 shakes a day and a sensible meal at supper. It also included alot of pills for nutrition. From my research it seems I could follow the same sort of plan with GB-RNY.

Im worried I will be rejected because I have no proof of dieting in the past.

Has anyone gone in without proof of dieting (receipts)? What did you have to do
?

Any other advice is appreciated. Im so anxious to get this party started and afraid I will be rejected.

Ps. This is an ideal time for me to get the surgery because I am living with my Mother and she is a nurse.

First of all, don't "pig out and gain weight". Doing so will just give you more pounds to lose later on. I am unfamiliar with your state insurance so I do not know what their requirements are. However, with a BMI over 40, many insurances don't even require co-morbidities (which you have).

As for "proof of dieting," I went into my consult without this as well. My insurance did require a 6 month diet within the last 2 years, which I didn't have. So my surgeon set me up with a local PCP to document the "6 month weight trial." I used this time to show my surgeon as well as my insurance company that I was serious about losing weight. I lost a total of 51 lbs pre-op. (some insurances do not have this requirement)

At this point, do not worry about being rejected. The important thing is to know why you want this surgery and be able to communicate this with your surgeon. I know you are anxious to get this started (most of us were). Use the time between now and your consult to educate yourself further and start making a list of questions for your surgeon. The list works two-fold, it helps put your mind at ease, as well as shows your surgeon that you have given this a lot of thought and are not rushing into things.

Good luck!!!

Liz,

Don't be discouraged, defintely don't overeat, and just be true to yourself...

In my experience, I had a lot of the same questions/concerns and my surgeons office was amazing. They literally help you thru every step of the process, their job is to guide you along. Don't worry about the record of diets, most insurances require you to take a series of nutrition classes that are doctor supervised.  This was something that my surgeon helped set me up with.

The only advice I would give, is to let you know that this isn't a quick fix... its definitely a process. Somedays I felt that I would never reach the end, as I tend to be ready to go once I make up my mind on something. But this process is here to help you, both mentally and physically prepare for these changes coming.

I've been thinking of weight loss surgery for the past couple years. It was in September of 2009 that I started asking people I knew who had lap band, bypass, etc, what their experiences were. It was in January 2010 that I attended my first seminar educating me about the surgeries offered. And had my first consult 6 weeks later and started my 6months of nutrition classes in the spring. I finished classes in late September, everything was submitted to insurance, which took 4+weeks to hear anything. I was the most nervous about that, thinking I might be denyed (but even if you are, its not a permenant 'no' as they usually give you the items that you need to achieve to get that approval). A month ago I recieved word that my surgery was approved and I will be going on a liquid diet in 3 weeks, with my surgery in 5 weeks for RNY.

So my advice is to not give up... don't be too anxious/nervous... Call your insurance company in advance and ask what the requirements are for surgery... it WILL happen for you... You WILL do awesome... and goodluck!
