Help losing pre-surgery weight!!!
I have just been accepted for surgery and need to lose 15 lbs before they will give me my surgery date..... I have been struggling for weeks. At first I lost 7 lbs and then I gained 5 of it back. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I am doing South Beach and other members of my family are having good success, while I am here struggling again.
Anybody have any good advice for what worked for them?

Hi. I read your response to someones post. I start my liquid pre op diet on the 9th i'm sceduled for srgery on the 16th. Is it ok for me to drink protein drinks? I already lost 22 pounds on my 6 month diet? I'm just worried that my liver won't be shrunk enough and the only liquids that will fill me up for a few hours are the protein shakes. But I don't know if its a good idea if I have them, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and have a nice day!
Usually your nutritionist will advise you on what to drink, but usually you want to drink the whey isolate protein drinks. I was recommended to drink minimum of 65 g protein, and then could have water, tea, coffee, sugar free/low cal drinks like crystal light, broth, could have skim or 1% milk, juice (natural no sugar added) had to be diluted 50/50 with water, could have sugar free Popsicles, etc. They should give you list as you get closer, or just ask them for sure. My hardest days on liquid diet were like days 4&5. The protein definitely helps. When I got home from hospital by day 4 I literally felt like starving and started drinking isopure clear protein drinks and Nectar protein drinks as well. After week 1 I was back on regular protein drinks. Good luck!
I lost 37 lbs preop in less than two months by eating mostly protein. I cut out all pop and most carbs. This let the weight drop off very rapidly. The surgeon didnt have a problem with my liver at all. If I hadnt lost the weight they would have had to open me up because of my size. As is they bent a scope when they maxed out the equipment because of my belly size. I only know this cause I work for the hospital I had the surgery done at.
My experience with South Beach was that I needed to add new carbs in very slowly. The first week after the two week kick off I tried fruit, the next week I tried a whole grain. I was never able to have more than 1 or 2 pieces of fruit a day and 1 or 2 grains... anything more and I'd stall or gain. You may want to track what you're eating to see if there are any ways that "sneaky" calories are getting in... I've sometimes found that nuts, cheese or salad dressing were adding too many unnecessary calories.
Good luck!
